Eurovision 2020: CANCELLED!

What should the EBU do?

Satellite link up makes most sense to me, and would end up being one of the oddest contests since Eurovision came live from Harrogate :D

Surely the EBU would also help the poorer/smaller countries out a little bit too. Assuming Eurovision is heavily insured as an event, they would probably have CASH TO SPARE by not doing the full shebang.

Having a contest is fine but if we're on lockdown and no-one can get to a Eurovision party then there's no point in even trying.

Luxembourg or Italy were the weirdest for me.

I am enjoying some of the memes coming from the Eurovision community in this crisis

Also, if things get REALLY serious, it's probably not going to be the right time to do something like this when people have other things on their mind. I get that people may want an escape but I'm not sure it's going to be appropriate. If they are sure about having the satellite link up then they could have it at any time of the year. Maybe they would be better waiting until it settles down.
Oh for heavens sake - what the ACTUAL LIVING FUCK ARE YOU ON ABOUT? :D

WHO CARES? We're going to have nothing to do for the next three months! Who GIVES A SHIT if not every rule is adhered to? IT IS THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST! The most delightful form of escapism in the world! Frankly FUCK anyone who goes "oh I'm not sure if it's appropriate for ANYONE to have fun right now, MY MISERABLE NAN JUST DIED"!

Let's face it, it's possible to come up with a MILLION AND ONE arguments why doing things a bit differently would be NOT BY THE BOOK for whatever reason or another, but the Eurovision Song Contest is EXACTLY what we need right now in these dark and horrifying times!

Countries are on fucking LOCKDOWN. People are not allowed to leave the house unless for serious reasons. I doubt they're going to allow all the people they need for this to work to go out and film stuff for a song contest in some of the countries, it is hardly HIGH priority.

A lot of the delegations aren't happy about the idea of a satellite contest, from friends I have in the delegations. They still want a fair contest, or else what's the point of having one at all?

You may have noticed TV programmes are still on and being filmed in most of the countries on lockdown! Public entertainment is still a fairly high priority when you're trying to get people to willingly quarantine themselves for weeks on end.

And what are the delegations going to do exactly if a satellite linkup is decided? Put it this way - if she can get the cash together to rig a selection, I'm pretty sure Natalia Gordienko can get the cash to KEEP A STAGE TOGETHER FOR THREE MINUTES

The satellite link up itself also presents a number of problems - technology is great these days but having to do live link ups to a bunch of countries at exact moments is going to be prone to things falling down somewhere.

Just picking up on this bit in particular as the rest has been pretty well covered, but they’d have to set up 41 different satellite feeds for the voting ANYWAY. They’ve been doing it every year since the 90s! It’s hardly cutting edge.

Lady Gaga just released the video for her top 10 single filmed on an iPhone. Who the fuck cares how it's done?!

And if the satellite feed fails, they can always SING IT DOWN THE PHONE! :disco:

Yes, news bulletins and you know, IMPORTANT stuff. Other things like serial dramas, soaps, entertaminent shows etc around Europe have stopped now. Eurovision is WAY down the list.

Yes, they have a SINGLE camera facing the announcer. Not quite the same as the EBU having to time a live performance exactly at the right moment when each country will have their own technical issues anyway. If they're going down that route then a recorded performance earlier in that day is really the only way they can make this work.

We still need fucking entertainment!!

The number of cameras set up is not AT ALL relevant to the complexity of setting up a feed, which AGAIN, they need to do at exactly the right moment for the voting anyway, and that is much more unpredictable in terms of timings than the performances.

I'd accept a pre recorded audio description of Finland.

Show some fucking IMAGINATION.

Sweden would have a realistic hologram of The Mamas singing while they're in quarantine in their corresponding countries.

I'm saying that there's MUCH more that can go wrong with a live performance than a single camera, and we have seen from the past that issues happen. There's video feeds going wrong, sound issues, delays etc, throughout the voting. Anyway I'm tired of talking about this.

Oh YOU'RE TIRED!!

You're missing the point, we expect everything going terribly wrong! :D

Of course things could go wrong. There is no right answer but surely it’s preferable to be able to put on SOMETHING than call the whole thing off.

I’d like to think that most of the broadcasters would be agreed on that at the moment to be honest.
