So I saw an old friend yesterday and she bumped into someone we knew from school who was famous as a kid for not liking ANY vegetables with the exception of potatoes, and apparently is still ENTIRELY the same today.

This led to my other friend relating a story about someone she worked with who hated ALL fruit.

As someone who loves both, this has played on my mind massively the past two days. I mean HOW could you survive? What DO you eat? Is there anyone with such an affliction here?

I think there's a sizeable minority of people who live off pot noodle and beans on toast.

I mean I can go a couple of days with no raw veggies. I don’t because I’m not a child but it’s not that hard to survive on pasta, cheese and meat.

I've always loved vegetables. I find them much more satisfying than fruits, which are usually too watery.

Brussels Sprouts are major for me.

And of course olives. They're an unquestionable staple in our cuisine. They go with everything.

I've never understood how one could just HATE them in general. There are so many different types and the worst of them are pretty inoffensive compared to other things from other food groups.

I don't HATE vegetables (except celery) but for me they are either an ingredient (e.g. onions, tomatoes) or a tedious side dish that I only eat because it's good for me.

Apart from potatoes obviously which are amazing, but apparently don't count

Fruit is OK but best juiced and used as a mixer for alcohol :) I will almost always choose a dessert without fruit, unless it's banoffee pie or Eton Mess.

I know a lad who wouldnt touch a vegetable if you paid him, went to therapy with a food specialist and everything.

My former colleague used to proudly state he didn't eat any fruit or veg and took vitamin supplements instead.

He was also the size of a house.

This girl wasn’t and isn’t, indeed she’s quite “fit”

The only vegetable I dislike are broad beans and that’s a texture rather than flavour thing and as an adult, I can CHOKE ‘EM DOWN if I need to. (Story of my life right there, thinking about it...)

Favourite vegetables:

1. Aubergine
2. Mushrooms
3. Asparagus
4. Proper good tomatoes (and yes, yes, I know they’re a fruit TECHNICALLY)
5. Green peppers

I don’t think I’m counting onions in that as they are essential to LIFE ITSELF.

My other question of the day is whether ANYONE actually has evidence that the biggest con in history that is “Ripen at Home” fruit ever actually ripens at home or does it just go from flavourless and rock solid to shrivelled up or mouldy?

Oh you guys don't call them "eggplants"?

I don't think I've ever actually heard them referred to as "aubergine".

Aubergines I have never got on board with.

Ant tips on getting GOOD tomatoes in the UK?

My problem is I don't think i genuinely like any vegetables, cooked at least. I mean I eat them, and there are many I don't mind, but I don't actively enjoy any of them, really. And quite a few I find utterly unpleasant in terms of both flavour and texture.

Asparagus and samphire are probably the only ones I think 'oh lovely' when I see them on the plate.

They are ABSOLUTELY called aubergines in the UK and I assume France since that's where we get the name from isn't it?

And they're a funny one - you'd never just munch on one, but I've only realised the last few years how versatile they are. Nasu Dengaku OMG, what a discovery.

There are few that I absolutely hate, mainly eggplants, cauliflower (but I love broccoli), asparagus and leeks.

Eggplants and cauliflower I don’t mind in a stew with other stuff masking them. But on their own I gag.

Love cauliflower but got a bit sick of restaurants deciding £13 was a fair price for HALF of one.

Vegetables are one of my favourite food groups. I love every type of vegetable. Broccoli probably most, but I'd happily eat a plate of cooked veg for dinner.

I like fruit but I don't eat too much because I find it a) a faff and b) far too inconsistent in quality

Aubergines I have never got on board with.

Supermarket wise, buy “finest” and sniff em. Even then it’s touch and go.

Yeah the consistency issues with fruit is why I don’t fuck with strawberries anymore. You get a good batch and then six that taste like cardboard.

I’ve also gone off pineapple cause it hurts my teeth.

Sainsbury’s do cherry tomatoes in a TIN which are delicious actually. They’re my go to for pasta sauces.

I love pineapple so much.

Strawberries are average but edible until the British ones come into season. I’m not sure if it’s because ours are actually best or the less time transporting means they are fresher/ better or something...

The difference between a shit and good tomato is really extraordinary.
I genuinely don't think I had a decent tomato until I went to the South of France when I was 18.

Even now Mr L will occasionally buy 'salad tomatoes' from supermarkets which taste of nothing.

I tend to find greengrocers more successful for tomatoes than supermarkets. Still hit and miss, though.

I proper love asparagus with steak (and peppercorn sauce on the side, obvs)

I used to also have a thing for dipping mushrooms in hummus
