08 Falling - I think I can understand a bit now how maybe this album created less excitement than previous offerings. I wouldn't say rejected, because it wasn't really in hindsight, just a drop off from previous highs. But I think this feels positioned as a clubland album, much like Erotica was. But Erotica had enough pop songs to choose from for singles to keep the album going. The last two songs I've heard on this album aren't even dance pop the way the dancey songs from Rhythm Of Love were. They're full on club tracks. All those vocal loops and progressive sequences are not what you'd ever expect from a pop artist. She's definitely been influenced away from pop music here - it's not so much her difficult era or even artisté era, it's someone who is heavily influenced by what she was experiencing at the time and wanting to experiment and express herself. In that respect this album is very much a bullseye.

Anyway this is all to say I like this song as well!
 
05 Time Will Pass You By - oh twas almost perfect :D I've gone back and forth on this as it's played out... I like the obvious M People template, and the versus are nice enough, but the pre chorus and chorus are just way too camp for me! This would have felt at home on any other Kylie album. But definitely feels like a step back, even with the very-much-en-vogue-at-the-time producers.

That one was written as a SAW-style pop banger by the Pet Shop Boys, who were mildly horrified by what she did with it.

Not a fave of mine, but it’s fine.

Did you actually listen to the FULL SOUNDTRACK MIX of Where Is The Feeling? It is over 13 minutes long and goes in directions you wouldn't even expect. It's stunning.
 
Also the b-sides from this era need to be heard.

Her Saint Etienne cover (produced by the band) though not quite hitting the peak of the original, was very nearly was her comeback single before Confide In Me was chosen.

 
Well this ended up being quite the LOON rate! I'll definitely be coming back to this album. One other thing is for sure - I'm coming out of this a bigger Kylie fan than when I started.

I see this is on the expanded Spotify album. Listening now. Why would a song go from being a comeback single to being dropped from the album completely? Sounds strange.

This is nice. But it would sound very out of place on this album. And it sounds a bit watered down compared to original. It reminds me of when Tin Tin Out would do empty covers of classic songs.

This is nice. I'd have taken it over the M People track. And is more commercial than the house tracks. But for me the album doesn't need it.

They worked on another original song together (When Are You Coming Home?) which has never seen the light of day.
 
On paper I love Kylie + imperial era Saint Etienne, but having her just cover their biggest hit felt a bit reductive.
 
As an aside, I've been listening to "Look My Way" a lot this past week. Still AGOG how good it is :D
 
As an aside Time Will Pass You By is, I believe a cover of a tamla motown track.

Oh I love Paul Masterson. That version is MUCH better but I can see why they M People'd it. The album might have started to get a bit samey at this point.
 
There was so much hullabaloo at the time about M People being last minute contributors to the album but the fact that they merely re-produced an already recorded cover song on the album and made it sound worse is :D
 
Also there was an earlier version of this record before BIR became involved on which she worked largely with The Rapino Brothers. Some of the songs from those sessions later appeared on Hits+ They are all rather MEH.

Jesus fuck I hate you all for keeping this from me for so many years. Reminds me of Electribe 101, Suncreem, K-Klass, also giving me "Land Of The Living" vibes by Kristine W... just heavenly. I don't believe for a second that "uncool Kylie" was still being rejected by the clubs at this point, there is nothing about this song that could have ever been ignored in those early club classic days. This would have been perfect for that sound, that era.

i love where has the love gone. the male backing vocal takes it over the top for me - much like on madonna's why's it so hard.

That Paul Masterson Mix is leagues better. Discogs says it was an "additional production, remix" job on Masterson's part, though, which would make sense for a planned single release. Is there an edit out there?

there are a couple of fillers in the back half, but I do think this is a top 3 Kylie record. easily. it's just so fucking cool, she's never sounded better, the vibe across the board is sooo smooooth, it's a real delight. I love that it's such a one-off moment in her back cat, and came at a time when she wasn't huge but does seem to have cemented a lasting legacy of its own. very iconic.
 
It's okay when FUNKETTE and I make love to 'Dangerous Game' I am sure he will upgrade it to 76/10 as he enters me.
