House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel)

If I wasn't sure on episode 1, 2 and 3 definitely have me sucked in. I only wish I could watch it all in one go now. Gossiping tent lady to reappear asap please.
 
The Targaryen's were canonically the family that were notorious for in-breeding in GoT, were they not? I couldn't figure out whether the suggestion that Rhaenyra marry baby Aemon was supposed to read as horrifying to them as it would be to us, or whether it'd be considered a relatively uncontroversial suggestion?
 
Yeah the suggestion that she marry her half brother is really not that shocking for this family.
 
I think it’s the age difference, she will be in her 30s by the time he reaches puberty. Also up to this point the incest marriages were driven by the participants wanting them.

The last big one was Jaherys (the old king we see for a second in episode 1) who married his sister Alysanne which caused a big stir and lead to their family getting an exception from the church. Only 2 of their children married each other and they were close in age
 
Despite many poems sent to them within their father's council, the daughters of Charlemagne were never married. One could say it was about relinquishing power where the gain from outside would take away rather than augment or secure, or perhaps this more assertive streak shown from the daughter here can be likened to a subordinate form of masculinity from her father (just as Charlemagne's notably high voice was surprisingly documented (could it really have been flattering? Could it perhaps indicate his height and stature somehow?), and here we have the indecisiveness, which spilled over into hunting, for both I believe, and the embarassment of that applause). I'm just seeing some similarities here as Chaz's daughter's curiously were noted as having masculine features (possibly because, like the "he has my eyes ... he has my nostrils!" the offspring had to resemble their King's lineage and the blood line, which also is the connection to whatever Gods we have here, had to be justified and reflected everywhere, including even the architecture), and here we also have a daughter who seems to possess qualities seen as more masculine that her father seems to lack (the fact that he's opting for love rather than power seems to also suggest he positively requires strength from women). This probably has went off topic if what I've tried to say doesn't make much sense, but I'm definitely finding this storyline interesting.
 
So good again and poor Daemon who can’t seem to keep it up. It’s very engrossing compared to GoT where we jumped around so much.
 
Ooh, watching now. I guess I forgot the king is actually injured, but surely this would be widely known and render him an invalid by these people.
 
I hope Rhaenyra will cherish her first time as I cherished witnessing that chiseled, fuzzy knight
 
this was by far the best episode of House of the Dragon of the four so far. it gave me serious peak Game of Thrones energy in how fun and unexpected it was, how it twisted between moods and shifted allegiances, and properly advanced the story. I really loved it.

Rhaenyra's noctural adventure in King's Landing was giving a little Arya cosplay at first (in a very fun way), but then it quickly becomes this juxtaposition of Rhaenyra and Alicent as wanting sex for pleasure and performing sex for duty. and then with Ser Criston I think it was maybe the best GoT has ever handled an extended sex scene and also HE'S FUCKING HOT.

brilliant character work for Alicent, Rhaenyra, Daemon and even Viserys. I mean I literally gasped when Daemon came straight out with that offer to marry Rhaenyra and become incesty Targaryens officially. :disco: Matt Smith is really good in these "dropping the mask" scenes. Otto's genuine disbelief at losing the King's trust.

and then Rhaenyra's ability to lie to Alicent's face, and her decision to actively start using her intelligence to manoeuvre and manipulate the king, now that it's her reputation on the line... it was giving. incredible hour of TV.
 
Agree that this was comfortably (or uncomfortably) the best episode so far. All the intrigue...

Alicent didn't do much but pick at her nails and simper in the first couple of episodes but she has been much more interesting since becoming queen. I'm sure the aged up Alicent and Rhaenyra will be fine but it is a shame we won't be getting more than half a season with the current actors.
 
I do seem to (wrongly) judge this series in terms of the pop culture masses and how out of control GoT got towards the end, and by that token, I found this episode to be a bit SLOW. I'd be interested to know what all the INFLUENCERZ thought of it, if I could be bothered to follow them. On a personal level however, I also thought this was a great episode. I'm continually impressed at the writing, as I wasn't sure they would be able to measure up, but so far so good.

I do love most of the characters, there's just not really enough of them and the Kings Landing rotation of scenes is getting a bit claustrophobic. I am somewhat edging for more to happen. But SO FAR, SO VERY GOOD.

(I think I like LOTR more at this stage, if we're comparing :o )
 
I think I was hoping to get more perspectives. I wanna see what's happening on the other side of the world. That was probably the best thing about GoT for me

Whereas I'm enjoying the tighter narrative focus much more. The Lord of the Rings show is hopping all over the place and it's a touch tiring. To have two shows doing it at the same time would be a nightmare
 
This was the first great episode. I enjoyed the nocturnal adventure it was dreamy. I think i like Rhaenyra now.

However, I also think that the show needs more characters. They’re too few for such a big story.

Yes GoT did the multiple storylines and leaving some hanging for whole episodes thing. This being more focused is a point of difference.

I did think that Corlys and the Queen Who Never Was were going to be in it a bit more from the publicity though. I suppose it is still early days on that front.
 
I don't know the story from the books, but I do think it's wise not to try for the same scope as GoT. That was a moment that can never be recreated, almost no TV shows reach that God-tier level in terms of public appetite.

There's still plenty of characters and storylines to make it varied and intriguing. No one is annoying me so far, everyone seems well cast too. Absolutely gutted if the Rhaenyra actress is gone after half a season :o I guess the main meat and bones happens when they're older then.

Does this apply to ALL the cast? Or the current older ones will just be dead and we'll have to get used to a whole new bunch?!
 
One thing that has lost its effect, and it's totally understandable given how this has started with a big following, expectation and budget already in place, is the dragons and battles. The way Game of Thrones took whole seasons to build up to these moments made you appreciate them so much more. Here they're casually thrown in like it's the norm, I mean where do you even go. I still love it but it can never have that same trajectory

Omg that was so good. I love how they handled Cristin’s turn from Rhaenyra to Alicent. Since the book is just a historical account you don’t get a lot of details and I thought it was done to perfection.

I’ve been considering watching this, but like things like the Mandalorian etc I was worried it would be too bogged down in LORE that I need to know. I never finished GoT for reasons (disliking it not being one), how do you think I’d fare?

I might just try the LOTR one and see how it goes

HotD is a very concentrated, condensed story with a trimmed down cast. It might open up but it makes it very easy for newcomers to come in objectively.

LOTR is massive. You could watch it fresh but it is a massive expansion on the Pre-trilogy mythology.
 
Also watching either show as it airs once a week makes it a lot easier to follow.
 
Back to tonight’s episode, poor Rhea Royce she seemed like a door character.

LOTR might be more doable though, I'm sort of a silver card-holder for that franchise, I've read LOTR and the Hobbit a number of times (although the last time was in uni, I wanted to give it one more go before the movies ruined my imagination) but I've never waded into the other texts like the Silmarillion, but I guess I know it exists and how to spell it.

But maybe for me, the fantasy genre has just been blown out by the movies, the same happened when I tried to watch all the horror franchises and all the shit 00s horror movies when I had LoveFilm - I've never really recovered

And as for hot walking hate crime Ser Criston, he really was dumb as rocks this episode.

I really enjoyed the supporting characters being fleshed out more. Not quite sure about whether they should have been quite so on the nose with Daemon dispatching his wife. I did enjoy him batting off an accusation of murder with "I am going to take your house as is my right".

Larys Strong, the son of the new hand. He’s made a few appearances before. His brother is the one who broke up the fight at the end.
 
It is interesting that his father has every appearance of being the most honest, sensible and reliable character in the whole show, while Larys seems to be shit stirrer extraordinaire.
 
Question - what was with the rushed wedding? Was it because of the fight and the risk that it would all go pear shaped if they waited for tempers to rise over the 7 days? Or was it because the king was on death's door?

I ASSUME the latter, but it was sort of lost in the whole Cristin drama.
 
I assumed that they (Princess Rhaenys) knew Laenor was too emotional about the death of his paramour, so they hastened things to happen there and then before he fucked off in grief.

it was a good episode, not as classic as episode 4 but the show is on really strong footing right now. I'm just a touch upset that Rhaenerys didn't get a dramatic close-up in the last shot. I fear I won't get over her recast.

the pacing of the wedding was perhaps a little off. a solid 12 minutes of elaborate festivities and then about 3 minutes of very hasty high drama. I didn't mind the violence of Ser Criston's FRENZY at all, but the aftermath deserved a little more time.

glad Viserys is dead. :disco:
 
omg at the episode 6 preview. I...

CANNOT BELIEVE that Viserys is STILL alive (!) and in power after a time jump of at LEAST 10 years from episode 5 and 14 from the first ep :D this bitch should be long dead!!! but the high council scene looks :disco:
