She’s at #3 on the first midweek flashes, but I don’t think they take streams into account.

To be honest I think her numbers are actually really good. Little Mix struggle to open this strong these days, so for her to be doing it isn’t bad, so far.

In completely unrelated news, the BBC have out their article about blackfishing from 2018 back on their front page. Strange thing to do, one wonders what prompted this? 🤔

The take off of the Bad Boy For Life video seems to have flown over the heads of many younger than me, even with the Diddy cameo in the video. I think the video is pretty iconic and memorable for those who were around at the time but I’ve just checked and the song peaked at 33 in the US and 13 in the UK. So a hit, but by no means a massive one and not a song I see popping up at the top of “old school R&B and hip hop playlists” or club nights.

The thing is, the original video was supposed to be a bit of a tongue-in-cheek commentary on white flight to the suburbs and the reaction of those white communities to wealthy black people started joining them, which works because Diddy is a wealthy black guy! The message is slightly lost coming from Romford’s Jesy Nelson who AGAINST ALL ODDS is white.

I only remember it because the cable channel in the lodge where my siblings and I stayed for my dad's wedding in Canada played it about once every hour and my sister got so into it that it was her ringtone for a while!

Don't indulge this guy - he's giving a *lot* of TERFs a goldmine of horseshit.

I admit I laughed initially, but then even aside from what you say (and yes it's not hard to see how he is playing into certain hands), I just feel bad for her in terms of how this is likely to play out in the long run.

I don't think she's necessarily being manipulated (and certainly she ought to know better by now), but I can't help thinking that she is at least being very badly advised by people who absolutely do not have her best interests at heart.

Sadly, I suspect you're right. I think the plan has been to go for the US market but the ciphers and references chosen to ingratiate her are backfiring and at a quickening pace.

Do you think there’s a genuine attempt to engineer the blackfishing image in order to create noise around the campaign?

I just assumed it was a combination of naive creativity and a stubborn need to “be herself”. Can people really be THAT cynical? It makes them no better than the Katie Hopkins and Piers Morgans if so

It's not impossible - the calculation may be that few people care about the blackfishing thing and that "all publicity is good publicity".

If that was the plan, I think it was short-sighted. I think the Americans are better at calling out racist bullshit when they see it than we are, even if only because a larger proportion of their population are PoC. The UK is in constant denial that racism even exists in this country - obviously a minority are recognising and calling this out but I feel it’s a lot less likely to cut through into the mainstream.

I think this live might bring her down. riding the coattails of Nicki's vile hate train is not gonna be a remotely good look for her.

it was getting 200k views when I looked, which is double what Adele's live got (!). everyone saw this shitshow.

Yeah it’s not a good look. Minaj is a laughing stock after the whole testicle thing, getting involved in that won’t go down well if it makes headlines

Fuck me to Guantanamo, this is quite the shitshow.

It could only get worse for her if the right wing papers start to support her over it.

It's all a bit sad because LM were THE girl group that seemed to have a genuine "we're all proper best mates and family" as opposed to the vibe of showing up to perform and then going their separate ways type of deal that so many boy/girl groups have. Then when Jesy left it was all presented as amicable and supportive even though it was obvious that Jesy was having a hard time.

And now it's all unravelling. The media is going to have a feast day.

Good for upcoming album sales though :eyes:

the big revelation from the live was that, contrary to what Jesy claimed this weekend about "only just learning that people think her look constitutes blackfishing", she actually admitted that Leigh-Anne sent her a text after the Sweet Melody video shoot to say it had gone too far. (sounds like things were strained already then if that conversation was had by text.)

so she's known how her bandmate felt about that (and maybe it's what drove the final wedge between Jesy and the girls, given that Jesy left the group so soon after...) for at least a year. and still she's centred her solo launch around this aesthetic. clearly her head is firmly buried in the sand.

also, Nicki said to Jesy "so you were in a girl group, right?"... as though she didn't feature on their song and literally perform on stage with them at the VMAs. shady bitch.

CANCEL THEM ALL. LOVE (SWEET LOVE) TO #1.

That insta live feels incredibly mean spirited to and outright dismissive of Leigh-Anne, doesn't it? This whole launch is dreadful.
