Joanne Rowling and other TERFs

I’m picturing these ladies going out for a nice lunch at a garden centre cafe. The black one asks who they are going after once they have defeated the trans scourge and there’s an awkward silence.

You've all caught this for what it is - a handful of people who are disgusted that their transphobia still isn't the mainstream viewpoint despite everything they've done to try and make it so. "I was loud and obnoxious about my uninformed bullshit opinion and now some people don't want to spend time with me - I'VE BEEN CANCELLED!!!!". Please - you're not cancelled, you're just awful.

This is exactly it. Same principle for comedians who claim they've been cancelled; you weren't cancelled, you're just a shit comedian. If they were any good they'd understand they can say LITERALLY ANYTHING in comedy as long as there's a purpose, a point of view and a punchline behind it.

Precisely - James Acaster nailed it; "what's wrong, TOO CHALLENGING FOR YA??". Nope, just wasn't funny.

(Sidenote - Acaster has extrapolated on this in his current show, "Hecklers Welcome" where he imagines a comedian getting a poor response for an 'edgy' joke - "It's always, oh, crossed a line there, did I? It's never oh, underwritten and badly performed was it?")

I saw that Linehan was speaking at the Tory conference (:eyes:) and claims he was dropped by his TV agent over this.

And he was represented by the same agency as Tennant, which I didn't realise :D
 
The agent probably forgot he was on their books, when's the last time he did anything TV-related that wasn't just him talking about being cancelled on news programmes :tongueout:
 
The only problem with said discourse is that will mobilise the TERF society to actually buy it.

Look at Roisin Murphy.
 
The book is £19.99 - if it was £7.99, it would probably have sold a lot more. But the grift is strong in Terfland, the grift is strong...

Murphy wasn't known to the TERFs as someone to rally behind though. Does ANY TERF not know about Linehan and exactly what this book is about?

Also, I think Murphy sold as expected - there had been a *lot* of buzz, great reviews and, perhaps critically, a lot of preorders for which cancellation requests were not accepted. Those who passed on the album and those who picked it up for political reasons cancelled each other out, in all likelihood.

We'll see what the audiences on her tour look like.
 
I think to be honest, and not to belittle how hurtful it is for the Trans community, both results show in different ways that this is a very 'online' sort of argument. Roisin's sales weren't massively dented and nobody bought 'Glinner's book.

Anecdotally, Roisin played a gig in Leeds the other week which seemed well attended, apparently passed without incident and quite a few people I know and am pretty sure don't harbour TERFy feelings were in the crowd. They were all the kind of people who would be more active on Facebook than Twitter, so there's a good chance they weren't even aware of the controversy, or if so only dimly.

Murphy made some stupid comments through an ignorance of a complex issue that unfortunately still echoes what the majority of this country still thinks. She still believes, although inaccurately, that she is an LGBT+ advocate and doesn’t understand the fuss.

Linehan is an active TERF activist who is now making a career out of it. He’s a hack and contrarian.

They’re nothing like each other and I think it’s dangerous to paint everyone who makes TERFy comments the same way - Murphy represents people who should be educated and Linehan represents people who should be ignored. If we discard everyone then nothing is ever changed and things don’t progress. And we play into the hands of the brigade who play off fear and misinformation.

I’m not saying Murphy deserves our money. I haven’t listened to her since the comments and it saddens me. But they’re not the same person.
 
I think you can compare the two in terms of how much they appeal to TERFs and how much they make from them without necessarily saying they are the same person.
 
OT: A prospective translator has just sent me an email with an email signature that says

"Note: There are two sexes out there only, don't let them fool you"

WHY would you do that? When you want to work with me and you've already had an email from me in which my pronouns are listed?

They're all freelancers and so I don't think so, but it's just asking to start some trouble, no?

I've never understood why people looking for any kind of work ever do shit like this, but then I once had a CV in that had a list of hobbies that included "wanking", so what do I know?

He GOT an interview, because I was intrigued! He was a graphic designer type and he did this big spiral thing with loads of words in and said in the interview "No one ever bothers reading it and I thought I'd stand out if I did that".

It worked! But he didn't get the job...

The best thing about this ever is in German, the word for "girl" is not feminine, it's neuter, or neutral. I mean, TALK ABOUT ZERO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Or maybe, nowadays, it can be just considered forward thinking!

This has also reminded me of when I went for a university interview and the language course was based around a lot of literature, which I hadn't actually realised, but had on my CV that I liked reading in other languages. They asked me if I read in my languages and I said yes and then they asked what the last thing I read in German was.

As I was lying through my teeth, I didn't know what to say, so sputtered "Mein Kampf" ( :D ) to some horrified looks. I tried to explain it away in that I was doing history A- Level and had read it as part of that, even though I blatantly hadn't...
