Katy Perry - Daisies

Is that Smile song the new single or an album track..?

It sounds like something from Gwen Stefani’s last album.
Never Really Over aside, the material from this era is embarrassingly below par.

“Daisies” is steady but not doing particularly well at pop radio (bottom of top 30). I’m not sure releasing another buzz track is going to benefit any slight chance it has at becoming a “sleeper hit”. Is the album going to be 70% songs we already heard or is she only “claiming” “Daisies” and “Never Really Over”?

Smile is more like the old Katy Perry. Decent and catchy.

I mean. I stan.

Not Katie herself, but her career trajectory since 2015.

That said, I can pull together a KP Top 10

1. Teenage Dream
2. Wide Awake
3. E.T. featuring Kanye West
4. The One That Got Away (7th Heaven Mix)
5. Roar
6. Never Really Over
7. California Gurls
8. Dark Horse
9. This Is How We Do
10. Chained To The Rhythm

But it bottoms out quite quickly hereafter.

Yes it's not growing on me, and you've literally heard all it has to offer within the first ten seconds. It's pretty joyless for a song called "Smile". Vitamin C >>>> KP.

i like the concept. the general publice wrote her off as a clown and she's owning it kinda like Taylor owned being a :snek:.

but unlike Swift, Perry is not delivering musically. NRO aside, everything has been :turd:.

It IS undercooked, I must say. The production is so flat and chopping Diddy's verse out has left it feels very empty and anticlimactic.

01 Never Really Over - ABSOLUTE CAREER BEST
02 The One That Got Away
03 Bon Appétit
04 Swish Swish
05 365
06 Dark Horse
07 Chained To The Rhythm
08 California Girls
09 Firework (pre-overplay)
10 This Is How We Do

I actively WANT her to be good, but this run of singles since Never Really Over has been shockingly low rent.
Is it because she's not working with Dr Luke any more?

I think she's just entered a very common kind of downward spiral where the hits start to dry up a bit, so producers start offering their A-material to younger stars, combined with general fatigue probably causing her to not be as engaged as she was at her peak (she is about to have a baby, after all...)

She could come back from it, but I have a feeling this album is going to be a big old flop.

I am kind of impressed she's carrying on and releasing through pregnancy. Didn't she say she was unsure when she would even release another album now it's just HAPPENED which I quite like. There's still some decent material but yes she dropped down quite a bit and I think VoR is right it's down to material being offered and also her stage in career and life.

I think after this album, she is still a big enough star to come back with something like a Calvin Harris banger after pregnancy.

Isn't it more because Dr Luke isn't a thing anymore?

I mean Dr Luke was behind Say So, probably the biggest pop song of the year :D I think she (rightly) moved away from him because he's so problematic.

But yes, the quality control since Never Really Over has fallen off a cliff - has that Smile song even been mastered? It's utterly flat and lifeless. Bizarre.

Can she not AFFORD Max Martin anymore? The quality has fallen off a CLIFF.

She's always sold herself as a singer/songwriter but it's one of those cases where she HEAVILY relies on co-writers or co-producers and at this stage in her career to not be able to craft a song by herself is very telling**. Also, re: low quality material offered to her, she surely has enough money from royalties + touring to buy what's best out there when "younger" popstars like Ariana releasing lifeless plinky plonky barely so called SONGS.

**This also applies to Eleanor Goulding whose album comes out next week and it's going to bomb harder than Kesha's latest :(

OT - Katy's demo of "Black Widow" (originally intended for Prism) has leaked:

It feels a bit like a re-tread of "Dark Horse", which is superior and would have been on the same album, so I think she made the right choice in turning it away.

This 'Black Widow' demo is actually fabulous! The best Katy Perry song I've heard in years. Given also Iggy's cancellation I reckon Katy should have kept it for herself and on the album. Oh well, at least she made some royalty coins (split 10-ways in all likelihood..)

The Black Widow demo is not up to much. Her vocal is ok (some bits aren't her) but Rita and Iggy improved it dramatically

the whole album shoot is lovely

I’m just getting round to listening to Smile now.

I quite like it.

Smile sounds a little bit like Chained to the Rhythm in places.

I've seen so many amazing fan versions of the album cover using that shoot. I REALLY* hope she reconsiders and swaps out that text-heavy design before this album gets plopped out (she won't).

*don't actually care that much tbh

Y’know what I’ve had a moment to Daisies yesterday and I’m owning it.

Also Smile is good.
