Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers

in retrospect, despite the majesty of the first two singles and the brilliance of a handful of individual songs (enough to make a 6-track EP), I really hold no great love or nostalgia for Aphrodite. I feel like it was playing at being a classic Kylie era, but something's off for me.

many of the album tracks were very plasticky or flat and felt A&R'd. Price's production didn't pop. the nasaly vox were creeping in. idk. it's more or less at the bottom of Kylie's Parlo work in my book.

It’s the weakest of her Parliament albums for me (maybe tied with Golden) but, like every Kylie album, has several great songs

Plus I’ve added Heartstrings to it on my iTunes, and that’s one of her best songs :disco:
 
It's one of my least favourite Kylie albums full stop. I'll take both Golden and Disco over it. And I'd have to think long and hard about Kiss Me Once.

this I think is where I'm at too. although probably I would take Aphrodite over Golden, just because it wasn't recorded on a potato in a wind chamber.

you have to respect that a song so unfinished it has just one verse + chorus that repeat twice like a LOOPED FAN EDIT is still effortlessly warmer, catchier and Kylier than almost the entire album it was rejected from. queen shit! Heartstrings ha revenge!!!
 
Wherever Disco was in my ranking (and that's already higher than Sheena ranked it), I think the extended versions album has kicked it up a couple of notches.
 
"Illusion" is my Aphrodite bop of choice these days.

I kind of agree. "Looking for an Angel", "Put Your Hands Up", "Cupid Boy", in particular, feel very soulless/flat to me. "Better Than Today" is, well, could have been a cute girl but never grew into her looks. "Closer" and "Too Much" had great potential but were somewhat cheated by their short running times, and needed more lavishness/length to flourish and breathe. I really like the other half of the album though and it has the cohesive feel that X and Kiss Me Once lacked. She set the bar really high with the first three Parlo albums and never quite struck the same magic since.

I don't disagree with that. Although Disco is very comparable to Aphrodite for me, in terms of great concept with a flawed execution. Disco probably has more "replay" value for me, but I think that's because it's newer and we have 48 variations of it (so far!!!)

Distilled disco perfection. The pop-corking instrumental is such a victory lap for both her career and existence of gay men. Utterly sublime.
 
I have a really troubled relation with the works of Stuart Price. He pulled together some great albums but he really slept on the job when it comes to a couple of artists I really like - the production for Aphrodite being one of the main offenders (next to Day & Age by The Killers).

A lot of the songs are great stand-alone listens but as a whole I've always struggled with it.

To be honest I think everyone just expects him to do another Confessions like they do with Orbit and Ray Of Light but we all know the missing ingredient is MLVC.
