The one (and only) upside to the current charts is how much of a big deal it is now to get into the Top 40. I remember that being the case in the 80s - anything inside the Top 40 was considered a hit. Then in the 90s it became about the manufactured pop acts and their hit factory producers, and it was so easy for random pop acts to get one week inside the Top 20 and then disappear. It felt like anything outside of the Top Ten was a relative flop.
It shouldn’t be THIS difficult to get into the top 10 however when you’re having genuine crossover success with a song. That’s down to the stagnation issue. But still.
