LICENCE REVOKED - a Bond Themes sync playlist

I don't think this was ever in contention to be a main theme, but this gloopy but quite gorgeous Diane Warren number was the end credits song from Licence To Kill (1989). Legend has it Patti filmed this video either the day after or day OF her sister's funeral, and she definitely channels her emotions into a remarkable performance (the kicking off of the shoe moment is extremely iconic, to me at least). Later covered by Céline Dion on her 1992 self-titled album, and released as a single that became a Canadian chart-topper.
 
Anyone who YouTube's McAlmont & Butler's "Yes" - watch out for the fact that in every available performance, Bernard Butler appears to be playing a completely different song from everyone else.

k.d. lang - Surrender
Okay, now here's a BIG HITTER. Basically this David Arnold-penned behemoth was supposed to be the theme for Tomorrow Never Dies, until the studio decided QUITE late on that poor old k.d wasn't marketable enough and put out a call for artists to do a new song instead (much to the chagrin of Arnold, who references this song extensively in his score for the film). Apparently there were as many as TWELVE new songs received (at least one of which we may be getting later!) before Sheryl Crow was eventually selected. Surrender was then SHUNTED to the end credits, but at least we got it at all I suppose - it really is the ultimate 'lost' Bond theme for me, just perfect and frankly WASTED on the film it was for.
 
Surrender is exceptional. And the first one of these that doesn’t look a bit silly over the ‘wrong’ titles.

It works perfectly! So much so that I wonder how late it was still in the mix...
 
Julie Rogers - You Only Live Twice
This isn't quite up there with the Nancy Sinatra song for me, but it's an interesting curio that attempts to reflect the film's now probably quite problematic Far East themes (mainly by having lots of GONGS).
