Lily Allen - West End Girl

And who the fuck has won the spatchcock chicken, actually?

No Brit Awards performance

Apparently its too close to the tour which starts Monday (theatre Leg)

She really could do with putting a proper single out. 4Chan Stan and Nonmonogamummy are RIGHT THERE.

Agreed. I think Nonmonogamummy or Beg for Me would be great for a proper single.

they have bizarrely squandered a lot of her momentum with no single, video, no UK TV perfs or anything. having the acclaim and turning up to perform at fashion events in Paris is nice. but why not do a little more? no BRITs performance is genuinely mad.

I’m not sure it’s the type of project that needs all the extras. It feels more like a moment in pop culture rather than an album campaign with loads of singles and promo, and all the better for it.

I mean I'd get that if we were talking doing The One Show or Sunday Brunch, but it's The Brits. And she still has some arena tickets to sell.

Its obviously a deliberate decision where the UK is concerned. OK so she's saying no to big TV appearances and performances but I would like to see more in terms of another single for momentum. She did THREE chat shows in the US. Where she does need more of a push, I get.

I don't think a single without promotion at this stage would add much in the way of momentum, though.

"Allen isn't in the first act of her own show"... yes, it's a support slot, idiot.

I've read a lot of comments from people who were there who said that the string ensemble with crowd singalong was great fun. sounds like a fun way to get around the fact that she's only performing this album.

Lily also deals with a lot of stage fright and has never toured while sober before, so if she's stiff for the first show I'm sure she'll loosen up - in short, fuck off "Claire Biddles".

not really spoilery but just in case

Well, that was incredible.

Lily’s show is basically a one-act one-woman musical. It is a fully realised vision of the album. Each song has a story to tell with unique projections, lighting or props. The only spoken word sections are what is on the album. You get the sense that she’s playing a characterised version of herself through this time. She really puts her all into it, making you feel the distress of every moment. I can’t imagine how she’s going to perform this every night for the next 9 months because it is an intense performance. After Fruityloop, she took a single bow and left the stage. This is not a concert, it’s a theatrical performance.

As a way of showcasing the album in the way she intended, it is a spectacle. There’s some theatrical trickery, great staging, lighting and visuals on point. She seemed quite emotional throughout (but I’m not sure if this is a character choice or because she was genuinely overwhelmed). The only time she seemed to break character was when she smiled when people in the audience put their flashlights on for Let You W/in.

I wish I'd been able to get tickets now.

Yeah, it doesn't put me off either, actually. Not interested in one of the arena dates, and didn't have a chance at the local one, but I'm on two waiting lists.

I'm actually quite irritated by how uncharitable a take that is. It's billed as 'Lily Allen performs West End Girl' and that's exactly what she gave, in full, isn't it?

In fairness, I’ve been to many “does album in full” gigs and never seen just that…there’s nearly always the hits or something else to pad the time out.

Yes, I've been to a few as well. But when she was doing exactly as advertised, and this string ensemble support doing the hits was clearly a sop to try to appease that view, it feels unfair to me to then use it as a reason to criticise what the show was never meant to be.

Obviously it's her show and she can do as she likes, but I'm still struggling to understand *why* she's made the decision to format it as a hits-free show? It feels like she's just opening herself up to criticism/fan disappointment she could easily avoid by just doing a short opening/encore set. She could still make West End Girl the main show.

given that it's basically a sad album about the end of her marriage wouldn't it be a bit weird if she came out grinning for a cheery encore of Not Fair and The Fear?

she's conceptualised a theatre show based on the album. she's also doing an arena tour which most likely will have hits added. it really isn't that strange!!

It doesn’t sound like the format of the event was the only problem the journalist had with the show.

I do take the miseries at the Guardian with a grain of salt but and it’s quite possible she was nervous or ironing out kinks. But it’s not a stretch to imagine Lily Allen giving 20% energy to a live show :D

She should Kate Bush 'Before The Dawn' it. Hits for act one // interval // West End Girl album in full.

At the end of the interval of course. That's when Kate did hers

I first of all thought she really should perform a few of the old hits as an encore, but I quite like she's sticking to her guns and performing West End Girl as said on the tin.

I reckon she'll do more of a greatest hits set/tour after this era anyway now she's back in favour.

With both smaller venues in the UK and US then onto bigger arenas plus Europe and Australia this is looking like quite the mammoth tour all in all.

Glad they are finally pushing another track - I think Beg for Me and then Nonmonogomummy are the ones I would go for :disco:

Wonder if she'll bring Jade out for Hoopla
