Many many businesses DEAD

The only still-alive ones that i'll miss (that are in danger) are HMV and Waterstones. I'm also a bit sad about Hawkins Bazaar because it was my favourite shop when i was a kid. That and The Gadget Shop (R.I.P.)

And visiting Smiths is a REALLY unpleasant experience. Mounds of unappealing shit with round discount stickers on them. I'm sure it used to be much nicer.
 
WHSmith used to be almost a BIT OF A NICE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE. You wouldn't get the chav scum in there (not that, that discrimination existed in the 1990s) as pens and books were not enough to draw them in.

Now it's quite the OPPOSITE.
 
I miss Woolies as there is now NO GUARANTEED PLACE to get PISS CHEAP BOG STANDARD household bits...

I miss TJ HUGHES, I don't know WHERE I am going to get DISCOUNT KITCHENWARE and BEDDING any more :(
 
There's all sorts of things that I used to get in Woolies that I now have to haul ass to a big supermarket to get. It's just as well I don't mind a good walk of a day - I'm 30 minutes to the big Asda and 45 to the big Tesco...
 
The Wilkinsons in Cheltenham is famous for its SPAZZY CHECKOUT STAFF most notably a fat middle aged man with a lispy high pitched voice who says to every single customer in the queue (with the volume turned up to seventeen) "GOOD AFTERNOON THIR AND HOW ARE YOU TODAY?". I CAN'T shop there any more for falling about laughing.

I can't shop in my closest supermarket anymore cos they employ an ACTUAL SPASTIC who tries to engage you in conversation but talks incredibly slowly and loses concentration on putting your shopping through, meaning it takes FOUR TIMES as long as it should. It's a very draining experience.
 
I think they HAVE to say that in WILKOS these days, I know JEAN who's always on CHECKOUTS always says it to me in a RATHER UNCONVINCING FASHION. And ask you if you want LOTTERY CARDS or a TOP UP for your MOBILE PHONE. I mean DARLING DO YOU REALLY THINK SO?

I miss ANNE MARIE who has now been promoted to manager. She was DEAD GORMLESS and wore those REALLY THICK GLASSES, it was a bit like being in a Victoria Wood sketch

I never actually minded Peacocks :shy: I thought it's problem was more in its NAME, it's TERRIBLE TERRIBLE logo which seems very stuck in the 90s and I think it's women's clothes too. But the men's clothes seemed mostly ALRIGHT. I know there are people on here with bottomless wallets but as far as cheap but not TOO BAD looking stuff went, it wasn't awful

Has Millets been mentioned in this thread, is that in trouble too? The Canterbury one seems to have vanished (I had no use for it I might add) and is apparently part of BLACKS now. Is that a nationwide thing?
 
Also TJ Hughes was the most RIDICULOUS shop I have ever been in. I assumed it was mostly a northern thing until I found one in the furthest, darkest corner of a Maidstone shopping centre. It was like stepping back 20 years at LEAST
 
Well the Brighton Peacocks has GONE, leaving a very big gap on an already very empty North Street.
 
I noticed the jeweller's Azendi has gone into administration this last week or so. Their shop here is next door to a branch of GAME, so they will be leaving a big gap. And the children's clothes shop Pumpkin Patch (which I think was a small chain) went a few weeks ago in the same shopping centre as well.

GAME themselves are in trouble, their shares have been suspended, they can't stock the latest new video games from EA etc, and they're struggling to pay their shop rents. Expect them to be in administration by the end of the month.

We have one of their shops but I have FUCK ALL IDEA WHAT IT SELLS

The shit performing Millet stores were closed down. Millets has been owned by Blacks for a while now, but it's now all owned by JD, who I think are actually quite brilliant at what they do, they revamped all their stores to a really high standard (something a lot of high street chains fail to do) and really know how to market to their audience.

I thought there was one on London Road, but maybe it was Poundstretcher. The nearest (according to store locator) is Burgess Hill.
 
That'll be Poundstretcher and 99p Store. They're my guilty shopping pleasures.
 
Do you Brightonians use the Aldi on London Road? When it first opened it used to always look totally empty (I haven't seen it for a while so this might have changed since)

I've not been in it yet, but there's a Lidl about 5 minutes from me and it's essential for cheap alcohol (with apparently no alcohol in it)

Nooo... Food wise there's more than enough near me, to avoid having to go there. I don't mind cheap BITS and BOBS and ODDS and SODS, but something about Aldi turns my stomach.

At my school we used to play sports at East Brighton Park, and I remember we used to be able to buy HUGE bottles of really cheap drinks in that Lidl called things like 'Coola' and 'Lemonurd' for like 10p. They were pure sugar but that didn't matter.

I miss Panda Pops and those plastic juice cartons for 10p that came in a range of watered-down flavours (like raspberry, orange, flat cola). It was always cool to not use the straw and instead bite into the bottom and drink it the other way around.
