They’re OVERPRICED OPPORTUNISTIC ROBDOGS. £3 for a packet of Haribo at the train station branches which would be a quid anywhere else? The shops are a right state as well
 
I‘m sure Superdrug try to force things on you as well and, no miss, I neither have nor want a sodding beauty card. My barked NO to a lovely offer was interpreted as a yes on one occasion. Thank goodness I‘m more of a BOOTS GIRL
 
Speaking of Superdrug, WHO ON EARTH buys sandwiches there?

Admittedly I might fill the bag if they were reduced to 20p :)
 
Those "offers" used to perplex me. No other UK store would perform such a hard sell at the till.
 
Obviously this really belongs in a separate SHOP MOANS thread but is it just me who gets bewildered by the apparently random layouts in Boots and takes seemingly ages to find the right aisle?
 
One of the STANDARD CULTURE SHOCKS for any non-Brits visiting me is discovering fridges full of SANDWICHES, CRISPS and bottles of RIBENA when they go into Superdrug and Boots to buy TAMPONS or EYELINER. Just WHY?!
 
That’s not that bad is it, for Smiths? All that and they’re only closing 25 stores? Not big ones either, 200 jobs affected?! So an average of 8 staff per store!

I have conflicting feelings, my part time job through 6th form and uni holidays was there (book dept) so I’ll always have some fuzzy feelings. They had a nice refit in the late 90s but I think that was about it :D

I was there when they actually sold a lot of CDs and videos(!), it was a decent shop then. Now it’s just a bit sad, I suppose they always had stationery.

I was in the book dept, the best bit :)

It was only in the early 00s that they started to diversify, we didn’t even have drinks until probably 2002/3, but then it was DVD players too
 
Meal Deals are such a feature of British modern life.

To be fair the Boots meal deal is pretty solid.

that’s one thing I miss in Japan, they don’t do meal deals at all!
I mean plenty of people aren’t obese too so swings and roundabouts

their sandwiches aren’t much cop, some of them are whipped cream and fruit :gross:

I would say it was before 2000 that WH Smith was anything near essential. By the turn of the century it had just become an expensive grab bag of a shop.
 
My friend works at Peacocks and that's teetering on the edge apparently. They need to find a buyer in the next fortnight.

I imagine this thread will be getting much longer in the next few months.

it just seems so weird putting them there next to BLTs. There are also deepfried shrimp cutlets too (which is lovely), as are the pork katsu ones. But who makes a Potato Salad sandwich?!
 
A couple of years ago they shut our Post Office and it is now located within WH Smith (which I understand is not unusual). Always ridiculously understaffed.

I never go in there apart from using the Post Office.

there's a PARCEL COLLECTION STORE near me in the centre of Amsterdam that has added a fridge full of fancy ready meals that go for like 6 euros a pop. can't imagine who wants a chick pea lasagne when they're picking up their ASOS but i guess with the NOUVEAU RICHE one never KNOWS
 
Last week, I was in WHS on Sauchiehall Street - spotted the new giant MOJO David Bowie special. Hefted it, reckoned it was worth the £11.99, took it to the self-service till because no, I don't want to add a packet of giant chocolate buttons to my order for "just" £2 (they're £1 in Tesco)...anyway, beeped it through, came up at £7.99. Result.

So, basically, my failure to flag this up is killing WH Smiths.

Not sorry.
 
I‘m still tormented by arriving home to discover that the Boney M single I‘d bought in WHSmith in Hemel Hempstead wasn‘t Boney M at all but SO YOU WIN AGAIN thanks to some dozy assistant mishearing the request :(

Hope they ALL close down :)

Oh yeah, that reminds me the last time I was in one was with Mr Kate wanting to buy Electronic Sound with Ultravox on the front. Fingering them all to find the most mint condition one of course :eyes:
 
WH Smith used to have the worst price stickers on CDs that wouldn’t come off in one go. It was the main reason I didn’t buy from there.
