I was going to say it couldn’t be much worse than the final product (and which I agree is still a 10/10), but this is the first time I hear it flopped because it wasn’t the original version.
 
I dunno about y'all, but the original Loverboy is more about the SCANDAL than anything else for me. Debating its chart performance in retrospect is interesting, but ultimately pointless. Even if it had been #1 material, the rest of Glitter wouldn't have had done much.
 
I'm NOT getting my hopes up about the original version of Loverboy being released. It really is like gay fan fic. I won't believe it until I see it on Spotify.

This whole album campaign really does just reinforce how much M actually does LOVE her fans. It is genuine. The lambily is a different breed. I hope she starts a trend for other artists to do similar campaigns. This AND the memoir :disco:
 
Actually, have Madonna, Cher or Whitney ever done an unreleased compilation?

Hun, in 2020, ONLY the impossible is possible. Gags back at #1, Kylie actually releasing a bop, Ms Covid literally slaying with her debut era and breaking America in such a big way. All the girls are turning the party.

Fan service aside, for me stuff like this all about how much ownership she has over her art. I love watching her exercise that control over her work, when almost everybody else would be lucky to even be ALLOWED to touch a button.

The final mix of Loverboy is trash and I ironically STAN IT but in hindsight, maybe listening to it with the original supposed sample can actually make it decent, who knows? Samples (and interpolations) are always front and center in a Mariah's song hence why changing it at the last minute for the Candy one sounded so jarring and OFF.
 
The sad thing is that no one even remembers that version of I'm Real anyway. She should have just released Loverboy as it was intended anyway.
 
Does anyone have the Billboard magazine review of "Loverboy"? Billboard wasn't exactly known for its negative music reviews, but they WENT IN on that single. Absolutely trashed it!
 
Yes, but that’s because it was fucking TERRIBLE, whatever the reason. I remember being astonished at just how bad it was, considering I’d quite liked her up to that point.

Same for me. I remember desperately trying to enjoy it, but I just couldn't. Having said that, I quite like it now, even though it's obviously still ghastly. :shy:
 
She was a guilty pleasure for me post-Butterfly for the most part- the saccharine ballads just got too much mainly- but I generally still liked the uptempos and R&B jams but FUCK ME, she went off a cliff at that point. It remains a baffling career decision too- there was so much better she could have lead with on Glitter, even if it didn’t reach the heights of earlier years.

The underwhelming single didn’t help, but the movie floppage and general mortification did the most damage. But yeah, she came back TRIUMPHANT!
 
But in fairness, with the exception of Mimi, what has she actually done since? All of her other albums have performed underwhelmingly since Glitter.
 
And don’t start going on about All I Want For Christmas Is You because we all know that that is fuck all to do with her current relevance, Walkers ads aside :disco:
 
It's sad yet predictable that some queens are still stuck in 01, while other queens are living in the moment of being positive, celebrating a living legend and remembering #1s in 05, 08, Obsessed slaying in 09 and again in 19 on TikTok, #Beautiful slaying the Billboard Top 15, scoring a #1 in her third and fourth decade and becoming a meme sensation.

Saleswise she isn’t much of a force anymore, but she still has a fantastic career and Caution was her best album in years. She’s still very, very much A STAR.
 
I mean, the reaching to re-position Mariah as a Toni Braxton is... choiceful. Let's remember that Mariah is the only one of the 90s female icons (alongside Madonna, Whitney, Céline and Janet) to score AT LEAST ONE US #1 post-Glitter (and actually the number is FOUR!). WHAT!
 
I think I've said this before, but after the 20 year mark, a diva's worst enemy is no longer bad sales. It's bad music. Protecting the legacy is much more important than chasing sales.

Also, her tours do quite well no? She's one of the few singers that, before COVID, really committed to a "world" tour without JANCELLING IT.
 
Her tours do ok. She's not really pulling in the punters like Celine.
 
Loverboy really was a disaster and ruined things for years to come, but I doubt anyone remembers it as much as we do. Her run of hit albums and #1s was bound to end.

But I agree with @KindaCool her biggest problem post Glitter is bad music (Truimphant and #beautiful aside).

Let me rephrase what I said; her problem (for me) was a toxic combination of bad music and horrible whispery vocals.


Basically same problem with Madonna post-Confessions.

I mean she practically has a monopoly on the Christmas/Holiday tour 'market'. It's basically untouched by any other big artist.
