2000, Spain, No. 8 smash in 2003! This is a cover of a Mary-Kate and Ashley song which won Eurovision in 2000, when they were 13. XTM are brothers Xasqui and Tony Ten. They apparently had another top 40 hit in 2005, which I have no memory of.

I've always had a real soft spot for this one. It's just so magnificently chavvy, and anything that can slide Eurovision into the public consciousness without them realising is all good in my book.

This one was massively popular in America and managed to reach no 3 on Billboard hot 100, which was impressive considering it would be another fourteen years before David Guetta and Usher invented eedeyem over there. This samples Debbie Deb’s 'When I Hear Music'. Karan Kasar is on vocal duties, and the obligatory lip-syncing in the video is by Patsy Petersen, whose name sounds like she should have been one of Spider-Man's girlfriends in the late 70s.

Another one I really like, but never really paid much attention to until this rate. HOT TAKE: I much prefer this to 'Another Night'

Here they are lip-syncing for their lives on Top of the Pops. The styling och konsulting for the backing dancers seems to have been 'what if a Medieval minstrel had sex with a bowling shoe?'

 
Genuinely miffed at Urban Cookie Collective's Feels Like Heaven not riding on through. I thought The Key, The Secret might have done much better. 2 genuinely beautiful stand outs that don't have much like them. In the words of their amazing 3rd song, "I'm gonna take a shit, I'm gonna sail away!"

Let A Boy Cry did better than I expected. The bat-shit Motiv8 remix is pretty much the only thing that goes for broke enough to compete with another blistering miss from this list, Diva, but we are at least saved a my friend Dave story about her being Dana Local, etc. The original and those drums is still a prize and a half though.

Not even the Steven Hawking rap could ruin this. Although just imagine how hot it would be if Ulf from Ace of Base had put rapper for hire ads out and somehow got on this.
 
Think About The Way is the right choice over It's A Rainy Day, but they're so similar.

I much prefer her solo Me & You (same producer), Number One and the Almighty remix of Uh La La La.

A shame she abandoned dance. Almighty would remix a later single called Star, but it did not shine brightly (a shame as they showed good form on Elin Lanto's Tickles at the time).
 
The AVICII Levels video looks like Geru somehow gatecrashed it dressed in her Chico Latino garb, which I wouldn't put passed her.
 
Mr Kiani's Push The Feeling On suffers somewhat because of the video and his whole looking like an astrologer ridiculousness. You'd never guess he'd have a batch of When I Call Your Names in him.

4 Strings – Take Me Away. 31 POINTS

2001, Netherlands, No. 15 smash! With chilling predictability, it turns out that frontwoman Vanessa van Hemert didn't sings so much as a note on any of 4 Strings' songs. The unsung hero of the piece was Susanne Teutenberg, who looks a bit like a young(er) Patricia Routledge so it's understandable that they opted for the chip shop sensuality of Vanessa instead. Band member Carlo Resoort also released 'Beautiful Child' under the name Madelyne, which is another pop-trance smasher.

Whenever I hear this, I picture the bar in Leeds where I first heard it played in public, sitting with a group of mates I used to spend every day with but haven't spoken to in years. You know that sense of overwhelming nostalgia where it feels like someone's resting an anvil on your ribs? Yeah, that.

Bloc Party – Flux. 31 POINTS

2007, UK, No. 8 smash! This was featured on the re-released version of their album 'Weekend In The City'. Frontman Kele is no stranger to a banger in his solo career, either. His collaboration with Sub Focus on 'Turn it Around' is MINT. He's also duetted with VV Brown, but you have to take the rough with the smooth. He also spends his spare time feuding with Liam and Noel Gallagher, a pastime shared by every male vocalist born between 1940 and 2010. Anyway, we contrived an entire additional semi-final just to get this over the line, and it didn't let us down.

This is another one I'd never really paid much mind to until the rate started. Not that I didn't like it, just that 'The Prayer' was so fucking jaw-dropping that listening to any other Bloc Party song just felt like the wrong answer. I'm happy to stand corrected now, mind.

Here are Bloc Party performing it at Reading Festival, which I bet would have been mint to see live.

ATB – 9pm (Till I Come). 32 POINTS

1999, Germany, No. 1 smash! This one is a right swine to get hold of in the correct version, it seems the mix that got to number one was only the default in the UK. Daft really, because it's by far the best one. ATB's real name is Andre Tanneberger. Fun fact: ATC were forced to officially rebrand themselves as 'A Touch of Class' as a result of them being sued by ATB for the name. What a swell chap.

This is late 90s commercial trance-by-numbers. I'd never say it's a massive favourite of mine, but it's a reminder of a time when an unambiguous, almost entirely instrumental dance number could top the charts, so it very much deserves its place here.

Here's the TOTP performance, as introduced by Gail Porter. If she'd known she'd be bald as a coot in a matter of years, maybe she'd have thought twice about wasting precious time with that lesbian Eva Braun 'do.

Snap! – The Power. 32 POINTS

1990, Germany, No. 1 smash! Yet more SHAM LIP SYNC SHAME rears its head in the top 100, and we're still only on No. 95 :D The culprit this time is Jackie Harris, who's taking credit for the delicate vocals of Penny Ford. Hot sample chat's back too, as this one takes elements from Chill Rob G's 'Let the Words Flow', Jocelyn Brown's 'Love’s Gonna Get You' and Mantronix' 'King of the Beats'. I'm trying to remember which advert from the early 90s this was used in, but the only results Google is turning up are for a B&Q one. If you can't say anything useful, Google, then kindly fuck off.

This one's a bit too early for me to get on board with, and my voting pattern throughout demonstrates the shortness of the shrift I gave to anything released before 1993. Personal feelings aside, this one is legendary and passes the all-important test of being recognisable within a second of starting.

Here they are at the brilliantly named 'Oops Up Leipzig' in East Germany. Fuck me, I'd love to go to a Soviet dance festival.

I've honestly got so much renewed appreciation for so many of the 480(!) songs we've had in this competition, and Flux and Run Away are front and centre among them. Also 'Inside Out' by Culture Beat and 'Baby Baby'.

The Power was on a compilation I used to have on cassette when I was very young - probably 4 - and I used to listen to it ALL THE TIME. It's still a fave and I scored it very highly!

Da Hool – Meet Her At the Love Parade (Nalin & Kane edit). 32 POINTS

1997, Germany, No. 11 smash! Reaching No. 15 on its first attempt, this fared better in 2001 when it was remixed in 2001 by the Fergie who's neither the helicopter-loving former royal nor the occasional Black Eyed Pea. The title references the erstwhile Love Parade festival, held annually in Germany until 2010, when 21 people died in a crowd surge while trying to get in.

This one's a lovely little surprise, I must say. There's a sense of urgency to this that I've always loved, and hearing it feels like the start to a proper decent night out. This is another one that just loves to crush my chest under the jackboot of nostalgia.

Unsurprisingly, it's a bit of a bastard to find a worthwhile live version of this. So here's a clip of someone playing it at the Exit Festival 2017.

Mariah Carey – Obsessed (Cahill mix). 32 POINTS

2009, USA, No. 52 smash! Mariah Carey - real name Marion Curry - bags a very respectable placing with a song I'd never heard of before this rate started. Apparently, this became a TikTok challenge in 2019. I don't know what it involves, nor do I wish to. Cahill are a collective from Liverpool, their most notable member is Anton Powers, who released 'Alone No More' with Philip George in 2015, which was a very good and splendid song which nobody saw fit to nominate.

It should come as no surprise that this one really isn't for me. What I think doesn't matter, mind, as this one clearly has a fair few fans around here and therefore earned itself a spot in the top 100. Can't begrudge that.

Here she is on something called Lopez Tonight, singing the non-dance version. All that vocal coaching from Gala has clearly paid off.

Matt Darey’s Mash-Up feat. Marcella Woods – Beautiful. 33 POINTS

2000, UK, No. 10 smash in 2002! Normal service has been resumed. Matt Darey hails from Leicester, land of crisps and Covid, and has already popped up on this countdown as a member of Lost Tribe. In 2015, he changed his name to Matt Nouveau to better reflect the deeper music he was producing, which is one of the most toe-curlingly WANKY things I've ever heard. Marcella Woods is a prolific dance vocalist who may have been on the X-Factor, and her brother is producer Michael Woods AKA Warrior.

Absolutely deserves its spot in the top 100, this. It's a multiple orgasm of a track, building and peaking continuously. I love that it eschews the delicate, coquettish female vocals found in the majority of pop songs in favour of a big, brassy barnstormer that wouldn't be out of place in an early 90s house anthem.

Inner City – Good Life. 34 POINTS

1988, USA, No. 4 smash! Oh fuck, this is one of SORB's so I'd best get my facts right. The singer on this one is Paris Grey, and Wikipedia describes the video as her ‘prancing around London’. The hook that sounds a bit like the music from Streets of Rage is iconic in itself, and has been sampled dozens of times - most notably by Rihanna on 'Bubble Pop', and in distorted form by our own Hercules and Love Affair on 'You Belong'.

I can't honestly claim this is an all time favourite, but I enjoy it while it's on and I've nothing but respect for its enduring legacy and influence. It's one of the tracks from that 1988 - 1992 period that I'm happy to say I quite like.
