2000, Belgium, No. 3 smash! The massacre of the Tisch-sponsored Euro brutes continues with an unjustifiably low placing for Ian Van Dahl (not to be confused with Ian’s Daal Van, Skelmersdale’s top mobile Indian takeaway experience). This was bigger in UK and Ireland than anywhere else, which makes me think Brexit isn’t such a bad idea after all. Marsha wrote and recorded the song, with Cindy Mertens on lip-syncing duties for all videos and public appearances. Ian Van Dahl renamed themselves AnnaGrace in 2008. ‘AnnaGrace Van Dahl’ sounds like she’d be a right bitch.

God, I love this one, I don’t think my enthusiasm for it will ever diminish. It reminds me of the Summer before I started uni, enjoying the last few weeks of normality with the friends you grew up with, before moving halfway across the country and sacking them off because you’ve met much more interesting people.

The Ian Van Dahl project peaked with Will I for me. Otherwise I found it rather generic (although I say that whilst eyeballeing a burned copy of the Anna Grace album).
 
Who Do You Love Now is astonishing. Honestly I'm that Kllo gay when it comes to it.

Yeah Castles in the Sky was never a personal fave. It sounded factory line produced.

2009, UK, No 23 smash! Well, this was a gamble that paid off. Who’d have thunk these Birmingham-based mardy arses would have the chops for a balls to the wall electro banger? Only ‘The Racing Rats’ came anywhere close to the urgency of this, and even then they bang on about plane crashes in it. The lead single from their third album, it managed to chart in a few different countries, even becoming a number 1 smash! In Belgium. They now regularly use it to close their live performances. Papillon is French for ‘butterfly’, which I assume you already knew.

I’m so happy this has done so well. I’d expected it to be dismissed in the semis, but it’s lovely to see it so readily accepted as a dance anthem. A decade on, this still gets me. The drop from the instrumental into the final chorus is one of my favourite things ever – when I’ve had a few I’ll regularly go back and just listen to that bit over and again.

Here they are, absolutely booting it out of the fucking park at Pinkpop in the Netherlands. This features Ricky Tomlinson on guitar, and lead singer Tom Smith on a collection of different uppers.

2000, Germany/UK, No. 1 smash! Sue Brice, dear friend of Moopy and inventor of the ad-lib, struck gold here with this mashup of her track ‘I Need a Miracle’ and Fragma’s ‘Toca Me’. This has been performed on The Voice UK, and was even covered by international megastar Tiffany. Sadly, Brice claims she was never paid for her efforts on this, and so the track now exists in legal limbo. If you’re desperate, you can seek out the 2008 re claims she was never paid for her vocals, and so the track now exists in legal limbo and flat out doesn’t exist on streaming services (including YouTube). Bit selfish of all involved, really.

I mean, is there anyone in the universe that doesn’t like this song? In my opinion, its familiarity might have cost it a higher placing – when a song has been played to death as much as this, its hard to muster the enthusiasm for it you once had. Still, a dance-pop mashup becoming a major crossover smash? The early 00s were a fucking golden age.

Here’s Bricey lip-syncing for her live on Top Me, Pop Me. She earned that £34.50, dammit. Fragma should pay the fuck up.

2008, Sweden, No. 3 smash! The bushiest celebrity hair this side of Annie Lennox’s legs came thundering in from Sweden with this up-tempo statement of intent back in 2008. It would seem she’s had her passport confiscated, mind, because she’s never tried again since. She came from Idol, kicked fuck out of the charts with this, and then reached the final of Melodifestivalen a year later. She recently returned from a seven year break from music, and released a song called ‘I Trance’ a little while back. A title like that is pure TartNip, and I can exclusively reveal that it’s a winner.

I’d never really thought of ‘Release Me’ as a dance anthem prior to this, I’d always just classed it as ‘pop’. It’s obvious now that this is a modern disco masterpiece, with a middle-8 you could hang your hat on and a chorus that makes me genuinely wonder why she’s not a much bigger star.

Here she is performing on Idol. Actually singing live, too, which has been quite the rare commodity over the last couple of days.

 
I also think of Release me as pop more than dance, but that's the case of several songs here. What a fantastic record anyway.

1998, Germany/UK, No 2 smash! Tisch cull 2020 continues apace, and this time the victim is Sash!, who loses his third nominee. Poor dear sad old Cousin Tina is on vocals this time. Now, I’m not unkind enough to post that video of her attempting to sing after she’d accidentally swallowed an entire Yates’ Wine Lodge, so if some other unscrupulous bastard wants to do it, that would be swell. This was Sash!’s FOURTH UK no. 2. It almost feels like we should just let them win this rate to restore balance to the universe. Aforementioned Essex native Tina Cousins went on to forge a relatively successful solo career, including photobombing the ‘Thank ABBA for the Music’ single. None of her other songs were nominated, although some of them were prime candidates.

Poor Tina. It’s nice to remember her in happier times when she genuinely was a credible force on the UK dance scene. This is my second favourite Sash! song, and I honestly thought this would perform better than his others on Moopy. Reaching the top 60 with three songs intact is pretty impressive either way, mind.

Here’s Tina on TOTP. She’s much fitter than I remember her being, and that sponsorship deal with Bacofoil made for some very daring styling choices.

 
Apparently (and I do wonder if I'm regurgitating what I've read on moopy), the lovely natural beauty singing Lea from Big Brother's Miracle only got paid if she sang it live.

Energy 52 – Café del Mar. 46 POINTS

1993, Germany, No. 12 smash in 1998! A tantalisingly near miss for this slice of Balearic perfection, which lands just two places away from the top 50. First released in 1993, and finding much greater success in 1998, it topped Pete Tong’s top 20 dance tracks on Radio 1, as well as Mixmag’s ‘100 best tunes ever’. It’s named for the legendary bar in San Antonio (which I’ve been to, but I didn’t get a drink because they were a fucking rip off). The melody for Café del Mar is based around Wim Mertens’ 1983 orchestral piece ‘Struggle For Pleasure’.

Absolutely devastating. The very reason MDMA was invented, and an icon of trance which got the recognition in this rate that it deserves. That slow build can take years off your life, it’s just that fucking stunning. Eventually reaching a crescendo followed by a drop which can and should trigger spontaneous ejaculation in everyone listening. I’m sat here sticky as fuck just typing this.

Here’s Pete Tong’s version at the Ibiza Proms. Mind-blowing.

Sash! – Encore Une Fois. 46 POINTS

Le disc-jockey Sash! est de retour

1997, Germany, No. 2 smash! Poor Sash! Not only does he have to share his body with two other people, like @Lucille on an average Wednesday, he also loses out on the final by the narrowest of margins. This got the same amount of points as the song in 50th place, but didn’t get above a 10. The sultry French vocals come courtesy of Sabine Ohmes, who’s German. Fun fact: The official version we know in this country is actually the Future Breeze b-side remix, which was accidentally listed as track one due to an error when the singles were being pressed and thus became more popular than the original. A fortuitous error by those stupid clumsy fucks at the CD pressing factory, and I imagine they only made it because they were being hassled by Andi Peters again.

This one was a shock – I’d assumed this would be an easy top 50 candidate. It’s still legendary, of course, and absolutely worthy of being mentioned in any conversation about classic trance. There is another Sash! track that leaves this in its dust, and luckily that’s still to come.

Here’s Sash! and his fun4europe hairstyle playing a load of keyboards at once, while Sabine stands around looking like the lovechild of Tamsin Greig and Enya.

At the time it annoyed by that it was a bigger hit than Insomnia. However I have long forgiven it.
 
Looking through that final 50, I think the youngest song we have comes from 2012. That basically tells you everything you need to know about the state of modern dance.
 
Can I suggest a radio edit for one of the songs that is different to the one played in the semifinals?

1999, Germany, No 15 smash! Thanks to ATB, I’m legally obliged to point out that this group’s actual name is ‘A Touch of Class’ (Maybe we should rename him ‘A Total Bellend’ for making us learn different shit than we’ve already gotten used to). This is a cover of a Russian song called ‘Pesenka’ by Ruki Vverh, which was news to me. ATC would themselves have a very great honour bestowed upon them when Mel C screeched her way through a cover of this in 2018 (‘Alexa, play me the sound of a rape alarm watching its children burn to death in a house fire’). All four members of the group were from different countries, namely: Australia; New Zealand; Italy; and the UK.

Classic Eurodance, this, the sort of rare breed of song that defines an entire genre. I honestly don’t know how someone could say they dislike this and still sleep soundly of a night.

Here they are performing somewhere in Germany. It looks fucking mint wherever it is. The two women in the group really were quite fit, not that it was of any consequence to the two lads.

Oddly I think the Italian guy is married to a woman :o The Kiwi guy however is not, shockingly.

Some faves headed out now, Mysterious Times being one of my ultimate favourites.
