Moopyvision 2000-2009: Round 1 - Sweden, UK & Macedonia RESULTS

1st: Jessica Garlick - Come Back (197 points)

The UK round was actually looking pretty astonishingly competitive for who might win for a lot of it, but over time all of the others kept racking real hatred here and there leaving this as the only one that kept getting respectable scores in the main. For all I'd have loved a shock triumph for NIC FRANCAISE, this feels right though.

Really, the main thing I feel listening to this is regret (and I don't mean that bitchily, for once). What's stopping us from turning out a good ballad well-sung every so often? It's not as if it's an obvious classic - the public weren't rushing out to the shops to get this one on CD single. But it was clear enough in its appeal that it even managed to overcome the UK's twin demons this decade - getting drawn second (HOW did this keep happening to us so often in a random draw?!) and having plenty of competition in the same lane. Luckily for once though, we were acing our category, and beat out near on everyone else to get a Roger Pontare-style moral victory, joint top out of everything that wasn't the main I Wanna vs 7th Wonder shootout that year.

Jessica tried to make it in LA after this but didn't quite manage it, retiring from the music industry not too soon after, and there's a pretty sad interview out there where she talks about how selfish she thinks she was focusing on herself, and how she's dedicated to her marriage now and supporting her husband instead. Once more while listening to this - and thinking about near-on everything the UK has done since - I'm left thinking "oh, what a waste".

Probably the right winner - it did incredibly well from 2nd in the running order. I like 7th Wonder but I Wanna truly is garbage (sorry :D). A UK or French victory in quite a weak year would have been very welcome.
 
I bought the Come Back single two weeks in a row. The week it came out, and the week after Eurovision in the vain hope that it might climb. :shy:

Thrilled it beat out It's My Time anyway. That mid-song glory note is genuinely a bit THRILLING.
 
Anyway, at the rate it's taken me to do all that I'm LOATH to do Macedonia now and am tempted to save it for tomorrow evening. Also because there are some INCOMPLETE VOTES still outstanding from @Ag, @Zu 2 and @Jacques to bring it up to the same COUNT AS THE REST (which I will gratefully accept until then)
 
How on earth was Nicola “Delice de” France only THIRTY FIVE in that performance? I did say, Nicola. That tatty Lady Di do does you no favours. Did she listen? NO! Could I subsequently find that bottle of Advocaat which had previously been in my handbag before she stormed out? NO!
 
And it also goes to show that we can turn up when we want to (granted, this was 19 years ago!) - Jade, Blue, Lucie and to some extent Molly (who was presumably just too much personality for our European friends) suggest we still can.

Just because it has taken SEVEN HOURS to do these results doesn't mean you can't finish it now. VoR would never let us down like this, except for all the times he did.

Was she nervous? At that point she may have thought she had a shot at winning and the tension was too much. Presumably a fork and plate came out as soon as the votes started rolling in (or rather didn’t).

In fairness she's from Leicester so she's not used to being presented with a cake that doesn't have a nail file baked into it.

I feel it says a lot that Come Back won this, arguably stronger, decade for the UK, and snuck an easy 3rd place in the final in spite of everything against it, whereas Lucie's song (which I'd safely say moopy prefer, on the whole) which also won...only managed 15th. I don't think that suggests the UK being hard done by though, more a real example of how Europe has upped its game since 2002 in the sense you need to go in with winning ambitions and confidence now, or you risk being fucked over from the start. I just don't think you can have a "Come Back" type success these days. At least, not so easily.

But that's doing it a slight disservice - she sells the shit out of it, in spite of second slot (and in spite of that outfit), in spite of it being so subtle it could easily have been forgotten. There's something the right side of "dull ballad" territory here, it's got a little bit of magic albeit not a song I ever remember much or go back to.

I think this was my 10 but I'm happy this won and it definitely feels correct
 
I'd say the closest we've had to a Come Back out-of-nowhere top three lately has been Hey Mamma, probably. Obviously chalk and cheese compared to Come Back though, and probably much easier to accidentally bottle lightning (or at least, the offcuts of it) with a party track.

I think when it happens (Macedonia in 2019, that Polish one in 2016 etc) even then it's usually a lower top 10 kind of surprise (and often heavily reliant on one of jury/public) rather than storming into the top 3 like Jessica.

I think - and I'm sure there's some obvious mathematical rationale for this in the age of the jury and televote being combined - it's much easier to get a surprise top 3 when there's real unanimity across the board on what the top 2 are. Certainly the case in both 2002 and 2017!
