Moopyvision 2010-2019 Round 2: Estonia, Italy & North Macedonia - RESULTS!

8th: Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro - Non mi avete fatto niente (54pts)

Ermal-Meta-Fabrizio-Moro-e1524833476316.jpg

Another surprise hit from what many expected to be an Italian off-year. It's very nice, but all a bit worthy, no? I don't really have much to say about it, beyond that it did better than virtually everybody expected it to. Maybe the onscreen lyrics helped?

5 x 6pts (Raining on Me, Dark Carnival, Ag, Buttertart, Win The Game)
5 x 0pts (VoR, Alla, Pingu, Kevin, ameraal)

My issue with this is that France did it FAR BETTER that year with Mercy. Mercy is a dignified plea, this nonsense was two lads trying to right the world’s wrongs after 8 pints in the pub (something you’d know all about)

Ermal's entry (third behind the Gorilla and something else) from the year before was way better.

Italian men do love speak singing, don't they?

7th: Il Volo - Grande Amore (86pts)

The televote winner of 2015, lest we forget, Il Volo were big stars before the Contest, and somewhat unusually this didn't hinder them in the slightest. In retrospect you can see why this worked as a closer, it's incredibly rousing, even if it does sort of run out musical ideas 45 seconds in.

In many ways they were unfortunate to be under the voting system of 2015, as their runway televote success was completely lost in what appeared to be a two-horse race between Måns Zelmerlöw and the insane crying Russian woman.

I dread to think the influence on future contests had this actually gone the distance though...:zombie:

1 x 12 (Alla)
2 x 0 (Superstylin', Win The Game)

France did a song about refugees drowning while dressed in Jean-Paul Gaultier :D

Melody wise it was one of the best Italy have sent. I can't even remember what the "message" was but there was a dramatic urgency whatever it was they were trying to say.

Il Volo felt like a really bizarre mid-00s holdover. Between that, You Are The Only One and Keiino winning the televote, I half suspect the public really just wishes it was still 2005 more than is generally given credit

I actually didn’t mind ER E FAB but I think they must have come at a time after I’d abandoned hating Italy on principle :side-eye:

6th: Emma - La mia città (87pts)

Emma+Marrone+Eurovision+Song+Contest+2014+ZXvGV6G8_xRl.jpg

Italy's only true FLOP of their post-comeback era, and in many ways rightfully so. :D Emma was/is a huge local star so expectations were high, but what in the name of GIGLIOLA CINQUETTI was she thinking with this perf?

The cheap styling, the tinsel-crowned backing vocalists, the drunken crawling around the stage, ending on a DEATH DROP. It's a manic mess of the best kind, and I've become completely obsessed since reviewing it for this series. I'm quite certain she was on the plane back to Rome before the results even came in.

2 x 12pts (David 5000, ameraal)
2 x 0pts (Sewerynsven, lolly)

La mia cittá was the OTHER big revelation of this round for me :D What a load of INCREDIBLE BOLLOCKS!

5th: Nina Zilli - L'amore è femmina (91pts)

Nina-Zilli-Italy-2012-eurovision-song-contest-32668060-500-333.jpg

Essentially a peace offering to the gays after Raphael-gate, Nina Zilli was evidently a fun sort with big hair and a jazzy (but, crucially, not jazz) Winehouse-meets-Eurovision sort of number that I always enjoy a lot more than I give it credit for.

A touch lost in the 2012 shuffle but a respectable result all told, and a nice bit of consolidation from the Italians.

1 x 12 (Pingu)
1 x 0 (Suomi)

Which in context there's nothing wrong with. I know what you mean and I love Mercy but I can't help but like the shouty Italian aggression here

Pingu delivers another great set of votes, and remains one of my best friends online. If you want a poster with great music taste, look no further than Pingu.

I imagine the phrase 'my good gay friend Pingu' is often heard in the hallowed halls of Euroclub.

4th: Marco Mengoni - L'essenziale (107pts)

What a lovely suit :disco:

This is your classic Italian ballad really. Marco was the first truly big star to try his hand at Eurovision since Italy's return, and you can sort of tell from the performance. I think that might be what elevates a lot of Italian entries actually. Emma aside, you never get that stench of desperation the rest of the Big 5 frequently exude.

Song's very nice. Most people put it in the high end of the middle.

5 x 10s (Win The Game, Buttertart, Sewerynsven, Superstylin, Kevin.
3 x 0s: Tetris Rock, Raining On Me, Dark Carnival

It's a good job I don't live in Italy. I think my ovaries would explode.

If I had voted I'd have given this a 0 as well. What a disgusting song.

I've been planning on taking a career break and going over there for a few months. Since I won't be working, I plan to breed my way round TUTTA ITALIA.

3rd: Francesca Michielin - No Degree of Separation (159pts)

Francesca+Michielin+Eurovision+Song+Contest+ZqCOb-yWlpel.jpg

Given Italy had developed a bit of a reputation for aloofness in their return, this was quite a heart-stoppingly lovely surprise in 2016 - particularly following the bombast of Il Volo. Always likely to be a bit wordy and subtle for major success, I'm actually pleased it did as well as it did in retrospect. Love the dungarees too, plus the proud reclaiming the gladioli from that evil old racist Morrissey.:disco:

I will say that the original doesn't quite cut down as easily into a 3 minute Eurovision song as it could, and the middle eight is a particular missed opportunity, leaving her virtually no room to breathe and sacrificing the lovely ad-libs on the recorded version. Still, this is capable of making me shed a gay tear to this day when it pops up on my playlist.

8 x 12 (VoR, Win The Game, Suomi, Tetris Rock, Kalabaliken, Superstylin', Penelope, Dark Carnival)
1 x 0 (Ag)

I can confirm that in the end, only 2 points separated the top two. But is it Francesco or Mahmood?
