4th: Demy - This Is Love (123pts)

Another big local name drafted in to turn around the rapidly sinking ship that was Greece in the late 10s. This basic bop at least got them back to the finals, but as is so often the Greek fate, it felt fairly surplus to requirements once there.

This one always tickled me for just how little the production team attempted to hide the extent to which Demy wasn't singing a great deal of her own song. Those big notes are J.Lo's Play chorus levels of transparently not her voice.

She seemed to be having a lovely time of it all, though, so there's that. File under 'affable but forgettable'.

I do feel that had a slightly mannish diva barked this one out while wielding a leather whip and ill-supported décolletage, it's be at least a few places higher.

The pre-chorus “there’s an echo in my head” moments in “This is Love” are some of my favourite bits of music from Eurovision this decade - what a shame it then just stops and a very average chorus takes over. Yes, a damning review of my 12 pointer but I think this exercise has revealed Greece’s report card from the last decade to be quite SHOCKING.

I really really hated the rapping on Watch My Dance. It made the two Latvian rappers seem accomplished by comparison. Hell, it made Madonna's rapping seem accomplished by comparison.

3rd: Katerine Duska - Better Love (143pts)

A Jess Glynne moment from this Canadian-Greek import that raised some excitement in the preamble but once again lost momentum in the final reckoning.

A frequent issue with Greece this decade is an obvious lack of budget. In this case, I'd argue they probably gave Katerine TOO MUCH money. How on earth else to explain the impressionistic tampon commercial nightmare of this stage show? Combined with a weird live vocal mix and Katerine singing as though she had a mouth full of bees, this wound up as Greece's lowest-ranking finals appearance ever. HOOA! HOOA!

2nd: Yianna Terzi - Oniro mou (149pts)

Right so, WHAT HA HAPPENED was that @Pingu voted in good time, but via Whatsapp and I forgot to enter his scores. Before his votes were added, this was the winner.

Being cruelly foiled at the last minute feels kind of appropriate to this tragic cow TBH. A lovely STIRRING Greek ballad that could have been entered at any point in the previous 30 years, it was undone by the very bizarre decision to shove her onstage looking like she'd just wanked off a smurf and with virtually nothing else going on visually. SAD.

Lovely song though. Sorry to have put you though this Yianna (and Moopy)

Another early 10s 'Greece-on-autopilot' moment, this seemingly suffered a nasty vote split with La La Love from Cyprus, leaving both stranded in the midtable back in 2012.

At the time (and to this day) I was firmly team Ivi, but divorced from that little internal contest this is the kind of fun that I'm surprised Greece haven't really defaulted to since - it tends to work more often than it doesn't.

Brainless but fun, and very quintessentially Greek. Again, fat 'backing' singer in the wings was clearly doing a *lot* of heavy lifting here, but at least Eleftheria had the good manners to move around a bit to compensate.
