162 Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) (1999)

How a song so bafflingly cheap and nonsensical became a monster international hit and maintains a legacy almost 30 years later is quite a testament to how unbelievably catchy it is. Nonsense is definitely the word. I fucking hate the CGI alien. What a cunt.

161 Eric Prydz - Call On Me (2004)

To the outsider, dance is simple, and uncomplicated. The reality is, the background of so many famous songs have a deeply convoluted history.

The original Steve Winwood sample was brought together by one of Daft Punk and DJ Falcon. When they didn't release it, it was given to Eric Prydz to record, which he did with rerecorded vocals from Winwood due to copyright. Prydz did it very begrudgingly, mostly because his record label wanted a hit. It became a huge hit with an infamous video made for masturbation. Prydz hates it, finding it lazy, although he recently chopped into a DJ set, which went viral over twenty years later.

Never forget the Call On Me workout DVD.

160 Dannii Minogue - I Begin To Wonder (2003)

The entirely independent success of Dannii in the early 00s provided more glorious dance pop than most divas could even imagine. Debatably her signature tune, it's smooth, ethereal-adjacent electro pop and absolutely punches.

During Covid times I put a story on Facebook with the cutting her hair with scissors scene and captioned it something like “This is me now” assuming people understood it was for home haircuts.

I got a message from someone saying “You started drag?” :D

JCA was Dannoushka's most locked in soundscape since Xeonomania. Loved Come and Get It even more (I'm picky about which version though), and Feel Like I Do was pretty lethal too.

The penultimate appearance from Madonna on the list. I know I've expressed my distaste for her on this gay chat longe many times, but those most aware, will be conscious that this sits along side the joy I find in her music. Well most of it up to a certain point.

Get Together is pulsing 3am European electro disco at it's most crystal, in it's shimmer, chill and clarity. I know the new LP won't sound a thing like like this, but honestly I'll buy three vinyl copies if it does.

156 CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share (2013)

The debut track from Glasgow's finest. What an undeniable career opener, an electro indie classic, a gay pop favourite and one of my favourites. Wistful yet buoyant, and shimmering from head to toe. Just how I like it.

 
155 Moby - Disco Lies (2008)

Moby was well passed his sampling blues era (to great success, and many houses paid for by adverts, but my God we were bored of it) and was back on the dancefloor.

With a hot vocal from Broadway star Shayna Steele, this was basic four to the floor dance pop. The video included a chicken murdering Colonel Sanders. So that's fun for vegans.

154 Love Inc - You're A Superstar (1998)

Euphoric!

I'm not really fan of confidence inducing songs. I am a fan of late 90s big trancey synth pop. It took five full years to reach the UK charts, likely the wake of similar sounding tunes dominating the charts.

Had a revival in my life after appearing on a Drag Race Canada lip sync. Absolutely evergreen.

It's a double palindrome party! Wow!

The one dirty guitar types like to state is their favourite ABBA song, with many claiming they wish they wrote it. Sorry Grohl, Gallagher, Lennon et al you will never ever and have never in your wildest dreams get even close to the songwriting magnificence on display here.

An early dive into the stunning melancholic minor key pop they mastered consistently throughout their career. I genuinely want this played at my funeral.

 
152 Kylie Minogue - Love At First Sight (2002)

Turns out I lied, when I said I didn't care for it. I know it's beloved and the high placing tells a different story but I just don't get the hype.

Of course I like it, I like a lot of songs I don't necessarily care for, but in it's defence to my own critiques it is bright fun pop. Controversial opinion: I prefer the Ruff and Jam Mix!

It's my countdown and I'll lie if I want to.



 
151 Saint Etienne - He's On The Phone (1995)

Insanely infectious mid 90s pop from Chelmsford's finest. They had a balance, which is on display here, of playing with Britpop style kitchen sink lyrics, while musically taking influence from European dancefloors. A combination which naturally hits for me.

Do take in the Motiv8 mix, if you've got to 2026 without hearing it. It's essential for your gay membership.

Yes, added it was a banger. Although I must say I don't love all Freemasons remixes.
 
I love the Ruff and Jam mix of Kylie, too. The original is probably better, but that version is rather FUN (for America)
 
150 Sam Sparro - Black and Gold (2008)

Define noughties one hit wonder and you'd probably bring up fifteen names or so before you got to Sam, which is a shame because if this is a anything to go by he could have offered much more (although I recall the album being remarkably unimpressive).

The most notable thing I found out in my limited research was that he wrote this with his producer Jesse Rogg, which almost a spoonerism for Jacob Rees-Mogg.

149 T2 - Heartbroken (2007)

A sort of speed garage track that became huge back in 2007 as garage had a very commercial renaissance. Such a cute bop, despite the baby vocal, which became disgustingly prevalent a few years later. The vocalist Jodie Aysha is now credited on all version, so I presume there was a Coco Starr type legal wrangle.

 
148 Blondie - Heart of Glass (1979)

Jesus Christ and all the other religious figureheads, what an astonishing moment in music history. New wave, punk adjacent Blondie embraces disco and opens the doors for 80s synth pop.

Cooler than cool, sexier and more chic than anything had a right to be. An absolute anthem of multiple genres, a skill few could master. A disco masterpiece, you can never go wrong with.

 
The disco glitz and gloss generates something so scintillating it's never been replicated by anyone. A synthesis of riffs, attitude and pure pleasure. Harry's Hairspray co-star Vitamin C knew this enough when giving in to the original song's hook when she sampled the entire thing for her Strokes cover of Last Night.
 
I REALLY LIKE Sam Sparro. He looks like someone who might be quite irritating in real life, but his albums are always really good. He is obviously a huge fan of the 80s and 90s pop and puts all the many different references in his music

Of the recent entrants, I have particular fondness for Love Inc. It makes so much sense now it being a re-release, as even in 2002 it had a strangely nostalgic feel to it that I could never quite put my finger on at the time. It just sounded more Sash! than the Flip & Fill trance we were otherwise getting.
