390 Portishead - Glory Box (1994)
Groundbreaking, essential, devastating, stunning.
Reading up on their reaction to this being a hit (it set album sales on fire), they say it bought them houses, but they commodified the spiritual significance of their music. Dear oh dear Beth, what a load pretentious wank
Regardless, hearing this in the early months of 1995, a tricky time for me, the ethereal yet distorted nature of the track matched what I was looking for as an angsty teenager. It didn't provide me with any answers, but supplied a gloriously bleak black and white movie soundtrack.
