My Top 500 Songs (complete!!)

401 Deuce - Call It Love (1995)

This is mid 90s gay pop, when that was simply not the done thing. Straight men and ladies who did blokey stuff, like get drunk, watch football and urinate on the street with their tits out were ever so popular back then. To think that was the period that was considered to be end of history.

So in that scenario this lavender scented pop blast never quite achieved it's 7 week run at the top. Just a few years they were considered to be the prototype to Steps and are long forgotten. One of them married Ant from Ant and Dec, so her life really was just a long run of crushing disappointments.

TL;DR This is hot gay shit from the old days.

What a run of CLASSIQUES!

100% Pure Love is of course amazing and actually an even better song than Gypsy Woman, but fair play to her for managing a genuine follow up after THAT big single in a world when one-hit-wonder divas were a-plenty. 100% was a huge hit in the States, so there's that.

Jon Secada. Sometimes a cheesy voice, a morose lyric and a generic soft rock midtempo can really fucking WORK!

"Promise Me" is peak 90s piano ballady drama. Tori Amos with none of the angst but all of the hooks.

400 Mini Viva - Left My Heart In Tokyo (2009)

Who better to launch the top 400(!) than Mini Viva with a Girls Aloud reject. The team behind it were peak noughties pop and dance geniuses Fred Falke, Brian Higgins and Annie.

But what of Mini Viva? Indeed. They both still exist online, but are really rather uninteresting.

399 Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth (1987)

Triumphant joyous power pop. While R Bel had been hammering away for some time, this launched her into the world, right at the top. It may or may not be a 80s radio staple. It should be!

398 Let Loose - Crazy For You (1994)

I have consulted our resident heterosexual boy band expert @ButterTart and can confirm this is is indeed a smash! Way better than your normal 90s boy band fodder, without all that inconvenient baggage of a successful career. For me it's part nostalgia/ part pop gem and I've apparently played it more than Say It Right, so go figure.

397 Evanescence - Bring Me To Life (2003)

I have nothing to say about Evanescence. However please DO listen to the Almighty remix of Katherine Jenkins cover of it below, which to my disgust did not feature in the top 500.

Honestly some of the moral failings on the list, I may have to go Gay Catholic.

Love Crazy for You. Always reminds me of the rather stellar Now 28 where it's joined by I'll Stand By You, Meet the Flintstones and Carry Me Home. Shame there wasn't enough to follow it up with.

Ah the lost art of cramming as many songs and artists into 20 seconds of airtime. Bless you Mark Goodier.

396 ABBA - Honey Honey (1974)

According to Google, Honey Honey by ABBA is a "Song by Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley, and Rachel McDowall ‧ 2008". We're at the end of times. Thank God for ABBA though.

As cute as cutesy ABBA gets.

Some hot bottom friendly dance moves by the girls in the video. They WILL do anal!

This is one of the best & most EUPHORIC pop songs EVER. It's been quite forgotten for a huge hit, I always thought it'd be ripe for a cover from some X Factor type. The guitarist is top of my shag list, although maybe I'm best not Googling what he looks like now.

One of my abiding memories of New York is being in a bar and drunkenly proclaiming on Moopy that this is the best boyband song of all time.

How did Katherine’s version not make your top 500? I only know it because of you :D

393 deadmau5 - Strobe (2009)

I'm glad they never became Daft Punk big because those mice heads were just twat coded.

However I'm partial to this trance inspired EDM slop. It was all the rage and I was using a lot of ket ok?

392 Scarlet - Independent Love Song (1995)

I know for a fact this will get Moopy pulses racing. A lady power ballad about wanking, not the first or last, but for my reckoning the best. Another file under "why has this not stayed in public consciousness?" section of my fantasy record store, I was going to set up with @WiDGe->

391 Rihanna - Man Down (2011)

Perhaps entirely unexpected to be on my favourite Rihanna songs hotlist, as you'll notice I have a penchant for electronic beats, rather than dancehall. Obviously Rihanna is a nice safe face to represent the genre here, with I presume no death threats to gay people in her back catalogue.

COME HOME RIRI

FUNKS still doesn't get ABBA and I've never much CARED FOR THIS. It's a FUNNY OLD WORLD INNIT

390 Portishead - Glory Box (1994)

Groundbreaking, essential, devastating, stunning.

Reading up on their reaction to this being a hit (it set album sales on fire), they say it bought them houses, but they commodified the spiritual significance of their music. Dear oh dear Beth, what a load pretentious wank :disco:

Regardless, hearing this in the early months of 1995, a tricky time for me, the ethereal yet distorted nature of the track matched what I was looking for as an angsty teenager. It didn't provide me with any answers, but supplied a gloriously bleak black and white movie soundtrack.

YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS MORE

17/10

Everything Portishead have done is great, but the entire Dummy album is a cut above. One of my favourite albums ever, perfect in every way with Glory Box closing the album in magnificent style.

I have listened to it a lot. I probably should have mentioned I have Dummy on vinyl, which doesn't count on Last.fm :)

Ooh I might pop it on.
