My Top 500 Songs (complete!!)

Corona's debut is definitely on the podium for best eurodance album along with at least Gina G and maybe Haddaway (The Drive). Almost absolutely no variation and I wouldn't want it any other way - it was pretty much a greatest hits of the producers career history, but with a massive budget slapped on. The peaks are so rampant and lavish. No idea what happened with the sophomore set - the 4 recognisably Corona songs are all very good to adequate, but the pseudo rnb duds that dominate the tracklisting are just baffling - maybe they let Sandy have free reign whilst they went out for coffee.

Try Me Out is of course an "Ann Lee" co-write. She sure did get around more than two times that one. 2 videos as well, for reasons I've no idea.

Now I like a bit of SIR TOM JONES and I like a bit of CHICANE but STONED IN LOVE has always LEFT ME QUITE QUITE COLD. It's no STRONG IN LOVE featuring DAME SYLVIA MASON JAMES that's for sure

Oh I remember just how big it was.

Infamously it was no.1 for the whole time it rained in the UK. Some of the worst flooding I can recall in the country.

Those pesky Danes have always had a sizable sense of irony, just look at their Eurovision output, and this was served with a Copenhagen sized knowing wink. We were all hungry for a fun Euro banger and ate it up as quickly as we were served.

Oh the days before the world truly went to shit, when international clubbing was an exciting prospect rather than a dismal sexless week in Dubai with dreadful influencers.

 
309 Janet Jackson - Together Again (1997)

Now me and Janft have had our issues down the years. I never really knew her 80s stuff, enjoyed her 90s pop stuff and then was repulsed as she saw her career out grunting, moaning and creaming herself. So this nursery rhyme-esque, upbeat, breezy bop stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Of course lyrically, there's a sadness in her eyes, but she did cure AIDS.

I have since found middle ground with Janft in the era of streaming, discovering and enjoying her funkier early more dynamic material.

My ringtone, when that was a thing. An absolutely groundbreaking moment for women in hip hop, a huge crossover hit. A forever dancefloor filler. It is of course only for the sexy people.

Push It was one of those head turning music moments that we all have as we approach adolescence and start to discover music properly. Love that we were kids in a time when you could still hear songs that sound like nothing you’ve heard before. The late 80s and early 90s were a very exciting time. As we ascend towards the top 300, I know I'm very busy this week, so I may well pause or slow down. I will fill the gap, with either a list of the songs that missed out or some hot stats.
 
I read recently (actually I was chatting with ChatGPT, as you do) that “Vogue” was the first ever house song to go #1 in America. Quite an achievement. I was asking because, coincidentally, I was checking if “Pump Up The Volume” was the first in the UK… it wasn’t as it goes - “Jack Your Body” by Steve Hurley got there a few months prior. To answer @Sardonicus , yes MARRS sounded very strange at the time and ten year old me just didn’t get it. It was Black Box that changed everything for me.
 
And amazingly, “Push It” was actually from 1986. Which makes it even more futuristic. Salt n Pepa were ever the slow burners because they came too early; but no song had a slow burn quite like “Push It”. I think it was late spring 1988 when it finally charted.
 
I think I prefer Jack Your Body to Pump Up The Volume.

Although neither are better than Love Can't Turn Around :disco:.
 
I think I knew Pump Up The Volume as a child, and found it quite the scary, especially the trippy video on TOTP.

I may have made this up.
 
304 Shins - Phantom Limb (2007)

I loved The Shins back in the day. I guess they fit within my love of melancholic, jangly indie pop. Not a hit anywhere! Astonishingly New Slang doesn't feature here, but we will hear from them again.

There are three ABBA's. Frivolous ABBA, Indulgent ABBA, and Sad ABBA. This fits firmly in the latter. It's full on minor key, stark, post divorce with no IT WILL BE OK resolution. It's actually deeply depressing, if not for the cod reggae, which is a choice, an effective choice, but still a choice.

Firmly in their mature ABBA era, this was about as pure pop as The Visitors could muster (ok sorry Head Over Heals). If rumours are correct, the true Christmas no.1 of 1981, due to doubling up of charts over the period.
