146 Soft Cell - Tainted Love (1981)

I've used the excuse of "what is there left to say?" on quite a few of these in lieu of forcing something out. I don't need to tell you anything you don't already know about this surely. Besides I'm sure only about two of you are reading these (if you do read this say "I love Ag" below). It's relentless sassy shameless big synth pop and deserves It's status as a forever favourite for the grotty masses and more refined types alike.

 
145 Faithless - God Is A DJ (1998)

After the huge success of Insomnia (and Salva Mea yes @Sardonicus :D) , could they come back with a new hit? Absolutely. This is fucking holy in name and nature. Amazing it took this long to compare clubs to churches. Indeed they are comparable, both once gained huge following and secured millions of attendees, but are now declining and closing en masse :(

I love you Faithless.

 
I liked but did not love "God Is A DJ". Not sure why. It just didn't penetrate my soul the way Insomnia and Salva Mea (:eyes:) did.

"We Come 1" on the other hand... that was a big "we can still do this" statement.

144 All Saints - Pure Shores (2000)

I'm not sure anything summarises my nostalgia for the first few months of the new millennium (it was 2000 not 2001 shut up) than this. It sounded, new, fresh, it was crisp wavey electronica - the William Orbit production suited them perfectly. I feel like old moany boots Blatt claims they all hated it, but I may have made that up.

Always nice to see DiCaprio when he was still Chalamet for millenials, before the weird conveyor belt of legal but unwise girlfriends.

 
143 The Weeknd - Blinding Lights (2019)

You don't get one of the biggest selling songs of all time without getting the gays onboard. An 80s synth throwback that set the standard for some of the biggest hits of the 2020s. The hit for everyone during lockdown.

 
142 Bobby Brown - Two Can Play That Game (K-Klass Remix) (1995)

I have no idea how the remix project came around, if he was even involved but it gave him probably his biggest hit in the UK. Pure mid 90s piano house, it's just so ecstatic.

I know Bobby's reputation is in the gutter, and rightly so, so apologies for his appearance, but it is an absolute banger.

 
Pure Shores has the greatest oooh in a pop song ever. I wonder what shape the song was in (if at all) when the backing track at least was forwarded to Madonna via hotmail and numerous follow-ups from Orbit via MSN and Bebo asking if she got the email.
 
K-Klass were such magicians… one of the greatest glow ups of all time. The most unexpected piano house banger ever!
 
141 Nicole Scherzinger - Poison (2011)

Where do you even begin? Hard to believe FUN FOR EUROPE was not only birthed with reference to this absolute, tits never in, banger but it was FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

And then there was THE PERF. She came, showed us singing and walking, being very good at finding the right camera and many fireworks and then left. Eurovision owes THE PERF a lot of credit.



 
140 Helene Fischer - Atemlos durch die Nacht (2013)

The fifth biggest selling song ever in Germany. The previous most famous person to speak the German language really did it a disservice, because Helene makes it sound like a lovely, sweet affair. An absolute schlager bloater and seemingly Germany's own Bohemian Rhapsody, in terms of success, fame, recognition and general sing-a-longability.

I as a Brit don't know a single word, but I do sing along regardless!

Poison is rapid fire from the get go.

I got into Atemlos belatedly when at some German gay's pre-drinks and was addicted ever since. Achterbahn is the only time she's really came close to it since in my opinion.

She did a corporate gig in my home town years ago when was visiting my family and people lost their shit in the days before the concert. It bordered on mass hysteria :D
 
139 Dannii Minogue - All I Wanna Do (1997)

What an absolute thrill this was, when it came it out. Pre-empting the mass move to vocal trance and electro house. This single directly led to the existence of Believe and Girls Aloud's career, through the pop aware production line of writers and producers. Honestly when will your faves?

 
138 Kylie Minogue - I Believe In You (2004)

As ice cold and spine tingling as Kylie gets, yet still with that unmatched warmth that makes her the legend she is. I know she's had a few hits since, but in my mind this was the end of superstar Kylie 2.0. What a swan song.

 
Oh I was listening to that VERY SONG yesterday. 90s Dannii really was a treat. To think I hadn't quite realised how en vogue her sound was back then - her early 90s stuff was influenced by slinky US house and R&B, and her late 90s stuff was influenced by UK electropop.

137 Ultra Nate - Free (1997)

Dance music sometime struggles with having a legacy. Legacy was built into Free's DNA. Sometimes unfairly associated with Heart FM and sanitary towel adverts, it's so much better. At it's very centre it's classic house, with a slightly funky twist and a huge vocal. This was always meant to exist.

 
I like “Free” even though it’s not the greatest dance song of all time or anything. My sister absolutely detests it which I just find totally irrational :D

It absolutely suffered from overplay. But listening to it again now, it sounds just the ticket.
 
I wonder if Free still would have arrived her way had Crystal Waters delivered Gypsy Woman to her as originally intended. I do like, and bought the single for Found A Cure, which hasn't quite aged as untouchably, but sure does ramp itself up. I never bothered with the album as Medicine seemed so middle of the road. There was definitely a lot of goodwill towards her. A shame Desire didn't quite hit the spot. Free is sublime.

I get it. It’s obviously a classic, but I find the chorus a bit obnoxious :D

Found a Cure (and If You Could Read My Mind, her finest moment) are much more me, but I respect this one.

Not quite sure how this snuck on. I mean I like it and everything, but I'm surprised it's landed in the top 150. I recall a whole fuss about it being the first mp3 to go on to be a chart hit, which is such a weird brag with retrospect. I believe sports fans like this, which dillutes the erratic joy somewhat. We're really getting into "every dance track from about 1993 to 2003" beginning to appear.

Sweden's finest pop monster belts out a huge schlager anthem comparing love to heroism (does it? if so what a load of nonsense :disco:), which went on to win the X-Factor twice and cured 50% of cancers.

134 Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere (1987)

Fun fact, I wasn't especially young when I stopped singing "I wanna be with you and you and you", failing to miss the song title within the lyrics.

Anyway it's another to file in the extensive folder "Fleetwood Mac pop classics", it's far brighter and more sparkly than most of their oeuvre and thematically actually quite joyous. It's the last and fourth time you'll see Fleetwood Mac on this list.

A famous mash-up, turning a tech house track into an eerie vocal house banger. That piano rift! Be still my beating pilled-up heart!

 
Huge YAY for Fleetwood Mac and that song although sadface that that’s the last time we’ll see them.

I dislike most mash ups as I tend to know the originals first and they just sound forced and commercialised, but this one really works. That saxophone drop is EPIC :disco:
