Old TOTP (BBC4)

It's actually on BBC 2, some disco programme on now called Disco at the BBC; as well as the ones mentioned below, also includes Chic's Good Times, Gloria Gaynor's I Am What I Am, Laura Branigan's Gloria, ABBA's Dancing Queen and more  🎶

Now watching Boney M on Volume 3 :disco:

Nice way to lead into (meteorological) autumn 🤗🍁🎼

I might have lost some episodes due to disinterest but...let's see....

I have no memory of Horace Brown at all, nor of Ian Wright ever having blond hair.

Particularly aimless fair from Black Grape. No Bez. Kermit shoved to one side.

Do not remember this Cantona thing either...I must have been blipping in and out depending on whether or not something interested me by this time.

This Bryan Adams song is absolute shite. You always know you're in trouble when a band decides to do the 70s Rolling Stones tribute thing.

Jamiroquai. Wanker. Genuinely disturbing how successful he was. Strange time, the 90s.

God, the screaming for Peter Andre! Poor Bubbler Ranx, he was the real talent.

Manic Street Preachers. Such a strange period for them - selling more albums in a month than their previous 3 albums combined, doing very few interviews and sticking with the casual look - James wearing his glasses on stage was unprecedented. Australia isn't my favourite Manics song but quite an obvious choice for an appearance like this.

The Lighthouse Family. In a way, a genius move - don't strive for 'credibility', just go straight to Radio 2. And by jingo, it worked for them. Apparently they hate each other now; one of them pulled out of a tour, presumably the singer.

Fun fact: Three Lions was co-produced by Simon Rogers who first met Ian Broudie at a recording session with The Fall in early 86.

We seem to have skipped over another week and missed Belinda Carlisle's lovely In Too Deep which is a shame.

Still, at least we have TERRORVISION :zombie:

Not to belabour the point, but I really think Keith Allen may be the most mortifying person ever to appear on TOTP. No wonder Lily's so hard to like.

On a more positive note, Neneh Cherry's Woman has aged like fine wine.

Neneh Cherry might not make an album very often but when she does it's always great. Broken Politics was excellent.

Robert Miles...I don't miss the dead-cat-bounce-identikit-follow-up that the old charts gave us. Streaming had the decency to destroy that phenomenon.

I had memoryholed Darren Day covering Summer Holiday. This is the other thing streaming destroyed - the quick, dirty cover version. With the originals never being unavailable, it simply doesn't work any more.

Hahaha at Simply Red's hideous "official" Euro 96 song which was absolutely bulldozed by Three Lions and Vindaloo.

"In A Room" was the Dodgy song I liked. A wee bit darker, rhythmically off-kilter and ace harmonies. Shame they never gave us anything in the same league as this again.

Siobhan Fahey should have just gone solo. I think I Can Drive would have got a much better crack if she had. Such as it is, it looked a bit desperate, doing a Britpoppy/Beatley record on her own under the group name.

Mark Owen looking like he hasn't slept since the press conference where Take That spilt up. Needs a haircut too.

Ocean Colour Scene with Paul Weller on piano. Like being served a shit sandwich with a sprinkling of vomit. Fuck all the way off.

Celine Dion having the decency to play along with the "live" satellite link up conceit. Fair play.

Nice of them to finish with Paul Weller so that we could all switch off early and get a cuppa.

I'm just realising I've got my years mixed up and Vindaloo wasn''t until 1998. I was wondering why Keith "Fucking" Allen had two records on the go. Answer - he didn't.

I can't work out why the first two episodes of July 1996 were skipped. Unless they've lost them but I don't see any wrong 'uns on the rundowns and it means we lost Super Furry Animals first TOTP appearance.

My brain had also binned the info that Shaggy and Maxi Priest has teamed up in 1996. Shame it's not very good.

"England's Irie" is shite awful. Good to see Joe Strummer enjoying himself, mind you, although this is counterbalanced by K**** A****. Wonder what Bez was up to?

Apparently this is because the competition winner turned out to be a sex offender! Surely that would've been easy enough to cut around.

Yes - hardly as though the individual can sue for being excluded and therefore missing out on royalties a la Moopy’s own Jonathan King (which is allegedly why episodes featuring dodgy characters are now regularly skipped entirely rather than just cutting out performances.)

Do we think P Diddy's current scandal means we lose the six weeks that I'll Be Missing You was #1 in 1997?

I honestly couldn't believe how long they let that performance go on for - TWICE. Probably the most indulgent shite I've seen in all my years watching this.
