Gosh, MN8 hung around for a very long time, didn't they? 9th top 40 hit - and I'm sure we must be a good few years clear of the only memorable one by now.

Undivided Love very much in the B-tier of her many glittering hits for me, but lovely Janet Jackson-inspired routine, and always nice to see her riding a post-Naked high.

Did she? Sadly for Gloria I think most people probably know that song from when Will Smith used it at the end of the Miami video.

Me And You Vs The World and One To Another are two of the better indie tracks of the year.

Given they did three studio performances, odd they re-used the same Spice Girls one twice in two weeks.

The Divine Comedy's Something For The Weekend is such an unlikely hit. Did Radio 1 not absolutely hammer it or something?
 
Does history record Shampoo having a minor hit with a song called Girl Power just before Spice Girls release their first single and subsequently pinch the phrase for their own uses?
 
Sex Pistols were always massively overrated. What they inspired was incredible but their own records were largely turgid pub rock.
 
Oh, this is the Terrorvision record that's actually not bad. Notable lack of fannying about onstage for it which is an immediate improvement.
 
Why the hell were Spice Girls in Japan the week their debut single was released in the UK?? I take it they were making inroads there as well...
 
Suede. "Trash". Fucking champion. I've seen Suede 5 times but I wish I'd seen them on that tour, a well deserved victory lap.
 
I had totally forgotten that cover of Rush Hour and rightly so, absolute guff.
 
Robbie Williams solo career looks so thoroughly unlikely at this stage. Slogging through a cover version with a Generic Indie Band straight from central casting behind him.

  • Trash was excellent. Impressed to see Brett Anderson is still thin.
  • I'd forgotten Tina had covered Missing You. Pointless but pleasant. There's something about her here that reminds me of Jean Slater. Don't ask.
  • No recollection of this Rush Hour cover. The lead singer with all the charisma of a postman.
  • Robbie Williams, started how he meant to go on - attractive wanker. Rubbish cover, I think I bought it.
 
This episode has been a bit of a slog so far (Jamiroquai, some terrible punk rock band, a not-great Skunk Anansie single and far too much Pennis) but this Way Out West song that samples First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is a lovely little curio that I don't think I was familiar with.

 
Flava, bizarrely not even the most forgettable Peter Andre #1, but entirely forgotten nonetheless.
 
Thank God for Belinda Carlisle, presumably coked up and quietly fuming, to start the second episode. I love Always Breaking My Heart even if she doesn't.
 
I do feel like I'm grinding my way through 1996 which is funny because I don't remember it being a duff year...anyway, where was I?
 
I remember reading that Suggs had covered "How Bizarre" and was readying the release when someone else licenced the original and slipped it out, beating him to the punch.
 
Neneh Cherry's string section don't look too comfy in their army fatigues.
 
The bit in "Everything Must Go" when James Dean Bradfield just screams the word "happy" puts the shivers down me even now. Bloody marvellous. They're starting to look a little more comfortable now too - I think Nicky Wire said that the success of this album put them in a state of contradiction; they enjoyed the sales and the chart positions and the bigger audiences but all of it was soaked in the absence of Richey and that of Philip Hall, their manager and champion who had died at the end of 1993 and therefore, didn't see them become huge.
 
The graphic saying that Wannabe had already sold half a million after 3 and a bit weeks is a time capsule of itself.
