Old TOTP (BBC4) (1 Viewer)

I have no memory of this New Order performance at all. Well decent. Such an awkwardly sewn together bunch tho'.

Fuzzbox. I remember being utterly appalled at this. I was such a fan of their earlier work, all fuzz bass and ropey violin and this just felt like fluff. Also, being a shit feminist at the time, I thought that it was a bit of a betrayal; having done "Rules & Regulations" about women being oppressed in society to then turn up all hairspray and miniskirts singing a piece of nonsense about a puppet show was something I found vexatious at best. I hadn't twigged that they could, of course, do whatever the fuck they wanted and so what if I didn't like it. I was 16 and it was 80's, that's my plea in mitigation.

Soul II Soul. I do feel their general importance has been lost over the years. For some reason, my memory tells me that '89 was a particularly warm summer and they really were the sound of that summer. They were also one of the biggest influences on "baggy", in which indie bands took the slow lope of tracks like this over the pulsing aceeeeed rhythms that New Order were handing down to the Manc indie types.

I remember Mary J telling bleached cat's ass face Jo Whiley that Soul II Soul reminded her of a hot summer where she'd listen to them in her high rise full blast with the windows open. The same episode where she as good as rolled her eyes at a Gabrielle acapella and said "there's some bull shit going on here" after H explained his songwriting process. What a legend.

Anyway enough of the TROUBLES of the MODERN AGE and back to '89 when all we had to worry about was NUCLEAR WAR and PEG BAGS

Here's old WINDY JAMES again. She's forgotten her BLOUSE the NAUGHTY MINX

Just catching up on some recordings and recognised Carrie “Fame Academy” Grant as one of Sheena Easton’s backing singers.

OOH INNER CITY YEAH :disco:

I could CHOOSE TO LOSE YOU
But you BRING OUT THE BEST IN ME

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL
SHOVEL CHESTNUTS IN MY PATH :)

OMG IT'S the SUBTLE and RESTRAINED SOUND of the LONDON BOYS :D

Now METALLICA were quite well regarded BACK IN THE DAY and after the GHASTLINESS of HAIR METAL it's no WONDER

Oh gosh LULLABY is so gothlovely. Shame the album was a bit of a GRIND for us POP KIDS

I remember a fabulously SCATHING review of ETERNAL FLAN probably in the NME mentioning BONTEMPI BACKING and MEWLING from a HEIFER'S EPIGLOTTIS

WHO WHO WHO'S IN THE HOUSE
WHO WHO WHO'S IN THE HOUSE

Cripes it's a show about CILLA. Two minutes in and I can already see WHY SHE DESERVED TO DIE

Wonderful stuff. Obviously I could do without whatever Nicky Campbell was doing afterwards but you take the rough with the smooth.

God Requiem is a complete joy too.

I’m well behind- just getting Dusty in her Spagna wig and her taupe suit.

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

It was of course a DISASTER that the Nanas never deigned it necessary to have a bash at Help! “live” on stage, thus giving Lananeeneenoonoo their TOTP debut.

I still love Help!, though.

Paula Abdul and Donna Summer on the same stage though :disco:

SURELY they performed it on Comic Relief.

I'm sure I can recall a live performance of it from somewhere.
