Trying to find that hilarious video of Katrin Quinol attempting the live vocals but it seems to have disappeared :(

Oh noes! That was one of my ALL TIME FAVOURITES! In her TAN LEATHER TWO PIECE.

I don't think I've ever heard Wedding Present before. I didn't hate it. Enthusiastic performance.

I've said this before but they are one of my favourite bands of all time and I remember that performance so clearly. It's mimicing the video, where they all stand about while dancers go 8 shades of mad around them.

I remember The Wedding Present going on an episode of Esther Rantzen’s daytime talk show in the 90s. That’s all.

Indeed. This was included on a recent reissue of the relevant album. They couldn't get arrested around that time and it was all the TV they did!

I feel like the term shoe gazers could be mistakingly applied to them, as I've never quite understood the term.

It definitely stood out.

Shoegazers tends to be more dreamy, lots of reverb and chorus effects, all wispy vocals. The Weddoes came from a more indie/punk background. You can totally hear The Buzzcocks in "Brassneck", I think.

Oh, I'm about to lose some episodes. In we go...

Even watching Yell! right now absolutely nothing is coming back to me. Streaming has at least brought the Shite Cover Version to a halt because folk can just listen to the original any time they want.

From that into Public Enemy. That's what was great about TOTP. And, indeed, the charts in them days.

That del Amitri song became a Scottish classic. I do like the line: "American businessmen snap up Van Gogh's for the price of a hospital wing". Clunky but no-one else was saying it in the charts.

Sinead O'Connor. This has retained a real power. She looks lost up there and she's clearly feeling the song deeply. She's a fascinating study in how mass media couldn't deal with a woman who disregarded the male gaze and how they destroyed her at the first opportunity.

The House of Love - Shine On. I fucking love this record, even now. Hasn't aged a day.

Beats International - this is still decent. Poor Norman Cook got sued for 150% of the royalties. (SOS Band and The Clash both wanted 75% and were awarded such in separate cases...I think it got sorted out in the end but y'know,,,)

Thingy out of the Beloved looks like every gap-year cunt you had to try really hard not to punch. He was also a reigning Countdown champion for as long as it was possible to be so.

That's rough.

He didn't really score proper hits again until the late 1990s.

His and Zoe's house was ugly as fuck, behind an oddly placed small industrial estate but right on the beach.

He didn't really score proper hits again until the late 1990s.

He was a real grafter. Really worked his way up the club circuit. His having been a Housemartin was really held against him, which is why he started using multiple aliases.

Black Box not nailing the soundalike follow-up to anything like the degree that Technotronic did.

"Brassneck". Classic. Everyone knew it would plummet straight away but there was a genuine excitement around them going in so high - new at 24 was a big deal in them days.

"Enjoy The Silence" - another classic. I don't think they did TOTP in the studio for any of the Violator or Songs Of Faith And Devotion singles. Shame.

Rubbish version of 96 Tears from The Stranglers. They look like they know it's a bit shit too.

Christ, I remember Candy Flip.

It was only a decade later I would realise what candy flipping was after I had done it myself.
