The edition that was shown last night was the one shown the same day as Michael Fish told us all there was no need to worry about a hurricane being on the way. I was living in Notting Hill in West London at the time and got up the next morning to find half the trees in the street had been blown down!
 
Well I fully remember the 1987 storm. Still a few months before I began paying attention to music.
 
I know it is a bit creepy but I can't help but groove a little to I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone.

I remember it because it was the night before I went on a geography A level field trip to Shropshire to mince along the enscarpment at Much Wenlock and accost shoppers in Telford about their commuting habits.

Def Leppard went properly huge with this, riding in on a wave of public sympathy for Rick Allen and duly making a hugely commercial record (cf Manic Street Preachers in 1996) but it's painfully obvious that 5 bluff Yorkshiremen struggled with the US rawk stylings.
 
Meanwhile, that Motley Crue video in which they are all absolutely loving the big hair, leather, "tough guy" image and decadence. It is, of course, utter shite.
 
I can't watch 1987 Rick Astley without thinking of Bob Mortimer's impression on Vic Reeves Big Night Out.
 
Wet Wet Wet have the look of a band who split something stronger than a cherry brandy in the dressing room.
 
I remember quite enjoying that Wax record at the time but it sounds just a bit shit now. Given how many successful songs the two of them wrote, I can't imagine either of them are bothered by this.

The main thing I remember is that the video was an exact copy of "Close To The Edit" by Art Of Noise and my dad going "Oh, that's Andrew Gold" and me being like "eh?" that dad knew something about a pop record that I didn't.

My main father related memory from this era was my dad ALWAYS saying 'is this Madonna?' whenever China In Your Hand was on the radio.
 
If anyone has the "PopArt" DVD, put on the commentary track for "What Have I Done To Deserve This?". Chris Lowe is NOT keen.

I do recall both my parents being relieved when the Smiths split up, given how worried they were about the stranglehold that said quartet had on their peculiar middle child. I have no memory if Mozzer's solo career was received with horror or otherwise.
 
Strong move to play out with the No 2 when the No 1 wasn't available. Where were Pan's People when they were needed?
 
Then Jerico. I do remember Mark Shaw replacing Morten Harket on a lot of school jotters around this time. Can't remember much else about them, let alone the records.

Oh, and the fact that he had a friend called Michael George which was a constant source of amusement to him, particularly when they had both been drinking and would pretend to be Wham!

I think Michael Stripe and his ERM (Europe was giving us fun over a generation ago) came a few years later.

I remember when Michael Stipe came out in 98 (around the release of Up, IIRC), my dad's comment was "Was he ever IN the closet?". I remember thinking this was actually rather perceptive. I'd missed it but then I've never had gaydar and also didn't really give a toss.
 
Fuck me, WASP! :D Genuinely didn't remember them ever being on TOTP. Bloody rubbish, of course but entertainingly rubbish.
 
These episodes are very skippable...partly due to the missing Mike Smith episodes, of course; makes it look like there's more repetition than their really was. Also, quite a lot of guff on the programmes.
 
I had almost forgotten that The Alarm had a resurgence. I'm indifferent to it except insofar as admiring their persistence.
