I'm due a wee trip down that way myself. I have a handy wee 5 disc set in a slipcase that has all three albums, the GH and the b-sides comp. Only cost a tenner. Natty!

And I guess that's going to look even more marked when you're surrounded by a lot of dance music, which inevitably is a genre which dates rapidly.
 
I have a soft spot for Love Shack because I had to learn a group choreographed dance to it at a day summer camp... but then some older girl did a solo performance of Madonna’s Cherish after us and out-cooled us all :(
 
Hahaha. Primal Scream's "Loaded" is the most ridiculous TOTP of all time. None of them are on the record so they just flap about like twigs in a gale. Absolute shite.

Me too. My memory of it is largely from summer 1991 when I went to visit a friend who was at university in Swansea, and going out with a stupidly rich guy who had some open top car, and driving around the Gower Peninsula in blazing sunshine singing it.
 
Inspiral Carpets. This Is How It Feels. This was my absolute favourite at the time and I still love this record. I stood out in the cold for an hour or so to get their autographs around this time.
 
Late 89/early 90 does have a real shift in sound and feel. Big Fun look/sound so out of place and wouldn't have just 12 months previously.
 
Orbital's first 4 albums should be on the National Curriculum. Only band ever to make less effort on TOTP than David Gedge of the Wedding Present.

I was trying to think if 70s into 80s felt like such a shift, and I don't think it did - there was breakthrough of the New Romantics which I recall feeling like the biggest shift, but I think there was probably more change in general already going on at the end of the 70s that it didn't feel like such a jolt.

I would agree. It felt more gradual. The shift from punk to post-punk to new romantics wasn't so stark. Also, the change in the affordability of drum machines and synthesizers which was a massive factor was slower and impacted over a period of years rather than months.

Hard to believe with retrospect that Madonna would have a 7 year wait for a UK number 1 again, which would be in very different musical times.
 
What are you watching? I'm waiting for The Story of 1988 to start on BBC2. I guess the main channels are behind. I think they're up to the 90s on BBC4 aren't they.

I'm expecting some Terence Trent D'Arby, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson and Belinda Carlisle. And lots of random early house tunes.

The Story Of episodes mostly focus on whoever was in the studio a lot that year and whoever they can interview in person for the show, so no to all of the above. Probably expect some exaggeration of the success of Brother Beyond instead.

I was right about the latter- they talked a lot about the second summer of love and had interviews with S-Express and Coldcut. It was good.

Also Wee Papa Girl Rappers :D

They showed the All About Eve debacle (never actually seen it just heard about it) and talked about Cliff beating Kylie & Jason at Christmas.
 
The singer from Candy Flip went on to be a popular engineer, producer etc for various indie bands including The Charlatans. He also gets a namecheck in a Sleaford Mods tune. It's not a flattering shout out tho'.
 
I'd forgotten that the Inspirals had two TOTPs for "This Is How It Feels". Visibly more comfortable.
 
"Ghetto Heaven" still sounds decent. A few production choices of the period but they fix it in time rather than date it. Which is fine.
 
This dance version of Another Day is Paradise is absolute horseshit. Mind you, so was the original.
 
Just a few months after "Hallelujah" and it's amazing how much more straight-forward and commercial "Step On" is. Guitarist Mark Day was the sound of Happy Mondays - without him, this would be a run-of-the-mill baggy indie-dance cover only one place ahead of Candy Flip.
