Post a horrible single choice

I know her hands were tied and she had to be sexless & voiceless (ironic) but this really marked the peak MORiah for me. Particularly when there were better songs on off Daydream.

I'm curious to see what the Lambily thinks though. Will they hate me forever?

@KindaCool @dUb @Loufoque @Whatevar

I don't think we claim it/care about it/remember it exists most of the time but when it's on I like it just fine

two all-time stinkers

Mildly disagree as to IWGC (awful video aside), but yes "All I See" was tedious and desperate attempt to score a US hit. I think she might have had a better shot at a hit here with "Speakerphone", which was actually much more reflective of where radio trends were going at that time... and she could have still added a MIMS feature to it if the label insisted :eyes:

What would you have released in its place? I'm not saying it was a great single, but I think any song off My December would have underperformed. "One Minute" is arguably the most commercial / GP friendly track there, but still feels very SLIGHT compared to the blockbusters off its predecessor...

For Kelly I'd add "I Do Not Hook Up". She clearly had a gun held to her head at this point, and it was radio friendly enough, but I'd have gone straight to "Already Gone", or done "Don't Let Me Stop You" if they wanted something uptempo for single #2.

it's hard because as you say My December is not a commercial album. I fucking hate Never Again though - it's tuneless shouty noise. I remember when it premiered the Dave Aude remix actually leaked first and I thought "well maybe it's just a shit remix?". but then that turned out to be better than the proper song itself. :(

I'd have gone with a double single launch of Sober and Don't Waste Your Time. I think one or the other could've taken off. Follow-up with Can I Have A Kiss, One Minute or Be Still. They did have options to play with.

Old school pick - this was a huge flop that was clearly released because it was the closest thing to Wuthering Heights on Kate's second album. Thank Christ labels were kinder in the seventies, and she still had WOW waiting in the wings...

I know he's cancelled and everything but there's been a reassessment of the Kill Uncle album recently and some seem to think it wasn't that bad.

Well, they're wrong & this single was rubbish.

in the rarified territory of #1 singles that also brought a swift end to a popstar's GP appeal

Love the song, but it was probably a bit too bland. She probably should've gone with Love Kills or U Should Know Better from Body Talk Part 2.

Going back in time a bit... I love "My First Night Without You" as a song but this sealed her fate at least in the States where she never charted again aside from the "Hey Now" remake of GJWTHF. I'm convinced "Unconditional Love" would have been a top twenty hit had she released it in its place.

I don't think this one has been popular on Moopy?

lazy, lifeless, much better stuff on the album

it's worth pointing out that this actually did quite well for a third single.

I actually think Circus was a much weaker single choice? that's such a nothing song. it was a hit though.

The time she campaigned for this to be released over Love Never Loved Me was the moment her much-vaunted INSTINCTS well and truly abandoned her. :(

I always found the American mindset of being all "we can't have more than two bangers in a row, we need the obligatory BALLAD" quite annoying and jarring. Sure they wanted that A/C Hit but it wasn't always necessary :zombie:
Wasn't it released because of the Legally Blonde tie in? Or whatever movie it was featured in?

Some might disagree but A) it had already leaked in different versions so surprise element was gone and B) it plods and plods but doesn't really go anywhere (should have kept the middle 8 from the demo) and C) the vocal processing is jarring.

the video is an overcooked mess and G.U.Y is just not a strong enough song to be a single - #76 Hot 100 peak speaks for itself.

I enjoy it as a video and concept. The song is decent but forgettable. But I'd have released "Gypsy" perhaps as a single before it, and ended the campaign with this.

A horrible lead single choice. it really is a very undercooked song. I'd have gone with Ghosttown > Devil Pray > (album) > Unapologetic Bitch > Bitch I'm Madonna. with a video for Body Shop too.
