I'd also say I wouldn't really call it a 30-40 year cycle. It's definitely got much, much worse the last decade - I wouldn't say we were staring down the abyss of it for a good few decades before the 2010s.

Things are starting to look up at the minute, but it really is an astonishingly bad development that the open, unashamed white supremacism on Restore levels is now just publicly acceptable again. We really need to get back to repairing societal norms.
 
Farage appearing to implode is obviously deeply satisfying, but even if he takes Reform down with him, he’s influenced the Tories to tack sharply to the right and facilitated the mainstreaming of a full-blown facist party in Restore.

We ain’t out of the woods yet.
 
there's not going to be a time when the right are today's moderate Tories again. the shift to the right globally is a clear and direct result of late stage capitalism and the constant enshittification of life under a broken model. the system has created it and it will remain like this for as long as rampant capitalism and money worship remains the dominant force in society.

some countries may elect a left government but overall politics, the public and the discourse exist on a spectrum of somewhat left to very far right and it's hard to see that changing at all.
 
There’s no repairing societal norms until the tech industry is replaced of its bro geeks and we have leaders who recognise that responsible censorship and barriers on social media are not just a good thing, they are crucial to a functioning society.

There does seem to be a very strong parallel between the time that Musk took over X and Meta removed their filters and censor controls - right before the Trump/Harris election - that things really went south. It really wasn’t that long ago that seeing something racist or homophobic was shocking and people were reported and dealt with quickly. Now prejudice isn’t just the norm, it’s the default. You can’t fix or heal attitudes towards these things when the most dominant form of media is a Wild West of the worst kinds of bigotry.

I honestly cannot be arsed to watch this all the way through - i've skimmed it but i can't actually tell what on Earth he is suggesting - also the almost inaudible but unceasing sunday teatime drama piano music is absolutely doing my nut in.

This is what continues to concern me. I mostly see mainstream media downplaying stuff like this nowadays. Things that would have ended political careers years ago are now shrugged off and then forgotten about when another scandal inevitably arrives.
 
It’s the lead article on BBC News.

One presumes they’d have had to do their own fact check/article write/get approval etc. before doing it. Being supposedly independent, they couldn’t just post something like that without.

You underestimate his slipperiness. He will deny, never resign, and his supporters already don't believe it and are deflecting.

The only thing that stops this is if actually goes to jail. Which on the basis of this, I don't think he does.

I don't doubt those in his cult will shake it off and blame the woke mob, but all of these grubby scandals are eating away at gains he was making with ‘ordinary’ people
 
Farage must be nearing the end of his usefulness, surely. Musk has already thrown his lot behind Rupert Lowe although I doubt that the average UK working class racist could be persuaded to vote for a 'Rupert'. Richard Tice seems to be quite popular with the billionaire class, maybe him?
 
I think many of us find it very easy to dismiss all Reform voters as racist, voting on the single issue of few too many darkies. Of course, some are, and that core group won't give a shit about this.

But a LOT of their support swelled from an abandoned working class. There was a great article in the Guardian this morning about workers who have lost good, generational jobs in industrial towns and have failed to find new work. They feel abandoned by Labour, and many of them saw Reform as a working-class party that was distinct from Starmer's Labour and could bring back those jobs and the pride.

Seeing Nige and Reform taking bungs while sipping on champers and eating Oysters will really cut deep with these people. Burnham laying into Thatcherism is smart, and if he can deliver on improving these places as he says, it'll be the end of Farage.

This is, of course, true but they only need to lose one strand of their vote for the wheels to come off. I think a few people are finding the street fash genuinely scary and there is a pull back in progress, hence the Daily Mail finally coming round to Kemi Badenoch. Like you say, there is a certain branch of the disenfranchised who were being persuaded that Reform had the only viable solution who will now wonder exactly who is feeding them this line and to what end because they certainly weren;t voting so that a posh stockbroker could have oysters and a champagne Guiness top.

A susprise to see him with a Guiness - as the comedian Neil Delamere recently pointed out, Nigel shouldn't like a Guiness because it needs to settle.
 
Over on FB, this doesn't seem like a threat of course, instead met with made up stories of bus loads of illegal immigrants being dropped off every day in town to go on a rape and murder rampage.

I'm sure there will be twice as many grey bloc antifascistas ready to face them down. I got a bit involved with a couple of groups and they're better organised than football mobs.
