Googled which boyband Tina Burner was in, and amused to see they were called 5th Ring :D

Glamourising chem sessions even 20 years ago.

But is it glamourising it? I'm not necessarily sure that's true. Drag queens (or at least many of them) are known for near the knuckle humour. Where does it stop?

I'm not saying you're WRONG, I just don't know at what point a "pun" becomes glamourising.
Maybe I’m just a bit too sensitive around the topic.

Although I do think there’s a difference between drag on the gay scene and the more mainstream version of drag with lots of young fans that has emerged as a result of Drag Race.

Which has ALWAYS been part of the problem. But I take your point...

I actually like the 'twist' of splitting them into groups and not sending anyone home yet. It's going to give us more time to get to know the queens, and splitting them up and focusing on six/seven per episode, means it's easier to differentiate each queen from the next.

We all seem to have forgotten that this was exactly what they did last year with S12? This year they added the unnecessary lip sync battle to it.

I'm admittedly rather naive when it comes to all that but the meaning of Tina's name was news to me :D

Anyway, she just radiates C.U.N.T. but not in the good way. Not pleasing to the eye, same old tired sex jokes in the lip sync, and bad energy all round.

Oh I think TB will jab away quite entertainingly if one relinquishes the need to like the person. I have low hopes for her to live down to when she comes face to face with the garden gnome thing.

I don't especially hate Tina. She's probably not as good as she thinks she is. I have seen her before and she's a supercunt.

Interesting that they dump her in the covid season after 8(?) attempts and being one of the more famous queens outside of Drag Race until now.

This is my thought too. She's tried out so many times, and I feel like if she was in season 7 or 8 she'd seem fresher and more polished, but after 13 seasons that kind of "seasoned and self-depricating" queen is a bit of a tired trope now. I thought the same about Nina West initially but soon realised she was really something special on top of that. I'm not sure (yet) that Tina Burner is.

I get the feeling many of this year's queens were eternally on the maybe list. Not that, that's a bad thing. Casts aren't necessarily selected due to quality, rather fitting into a role/ creating a dynamic.

Thank God they split out the cast, otherwise I would have no idea who anyone is. The "twist" is what it is... it's almost become the show's own in-joke now. Tentatively interested in Symone (who gives me Elektra from Pose) and Tina Burner (because you know they are going to try to break her down).

Yes, although I do think drag queens should think a bit more about choosing names with a connection to such a nasty, destructive, evil drug. I’ve seen it destroy so many lives. I know of people who have taken their own life because of it. I know people who suffer severe psychotic episodes because of their crystal meth use. It almost destroyed and took my life. It should not be glamourised in any shape or form.

100% agree with this!
On a local drag level fine whatever, but having a queen on a TV show that's syndicated around the world, with a passionate young fan base with a name like TINA BURNER is just a bit grotesque to me, and not in a way that it's funny either. (And yes I understand it's a PLAY ON Tina Turner also :eyes:)

I think this is true!
Kandy Muse was definitely down to the last 20 or so for season 12. Tamisha Iman was MEANT to be on season 12, but had to drop out do to illness and was replaced by Jaida Essence Hall (!). Tina Burner :eyes: has clearly been on the maybe pile for AEONS. I imagine there's more too.

Like poor VICKY VOX! Who truly would be the cunt to end all cunts if she appeared on the show.

Kandy Muse was on the S12 finale, I saw today - on the lipsync they all did about registering to vote, she was backing up Dahlia :disco:

I find Kandy compelling in the way I find a tragic murder or car accident compelling. She definitely knows how to paint, but that permanently stunned expression she has going on, and the granny mouth with no teeth, and the gremlin voice, and the 'aesthetic', she gives me loife, dahling. :disco: But can she leave soon?

I don't remember this either, but then I comfortably erase memory of every season once it's over until I randomly decide to revisit odd episodes or challenges. Or keep the occasional favourite queen in mind.

So this felt very different, probably due to the twist. But I much prefer splitting them up - having that many queens in one episode is daunting and EXHAUSTING. I feel much better about who this crop is and can put names to faces in a way that I often wouldn't be doing until about episode 3 or 4 with some seasons (except I'm sure I'd still fail that if I tried)

I agree though it's the execution of the splitting up that needs tweaking. Horribly mean and useless twist aside, while I didn't hate the multiple lip syncs, there was definitely a sense of deflation because:

a) There were literally no stakes, not really
b) There were what, 10 lip syncs? Fatigue sets in
c) Hard to invest because we don't know who they are
d) Lip syncs always seem special, so it's a bit weird seeing what everyone can do early on
e) Same as point a, but no one was going home so where's the drama!

...but I still didn't hate it. At least two of them felt like the wrong result anyway and others were close. It might cause the "losers" to up their game and the winners, especally LaLa Ri who was a tad shoddy in her lip sync, to drop the ball later on. I'm sure they won't be able to resist engineering a repeat battle at some point, too...

Overall I'd have preferred individual challenges as pairs instead of lip syncs

But that was last week and this week I thought most of the outfits were pretty ropey to be honest, in most of the runways. I'm not so fussed on looks on Drag Race, I much prefer the performance aspect, but like Bev says, it's just noticeable and surprising is all. There's usually one or two who are TOP TIER in that department. Maybe it's just early days. As usual, some of the commentary feels like it could easily be swapped around to suit most of the queens. I thought Elliott might be read to filth for that "just rented a black top hat costume for a tenner" night time outfit, but apparently not.

Symone seems like a proper star and different to what we've seen before. Not hating Kandy (yet) at all, she's just generating screen time more than anything. Olivia is lovely. Agreed Tina seems CUNTY but I'm reluctant to commit to that because I'm not sure she's actually BEEN cunty at all :D But yes there's just something there, however she's made me laugh a fair few times already. I'd rather she was in it than not. I imagine she has the most pressure, by a long shot. Gottmik I'm finding a tad annoying in the talking heads but looks to be a solid competitor. LaLa Ri is very likeable, but expendable as fuck although she seemed to step up her game this week so who knows. It's a decent bunch overall.

Utica is my favourite early on, mind. Praying she lives up to expectations because I felt like her humour and talking heads were far funnier and more observant than the majority and her outfit was fun without being too try hard.

Assuming the Thorgy Thor comparisons are only due to being QUIRKY and GANGLY and it stops right there please god

Everything I've seen of Utica outside the show seems like she's going HARD to appeal to the Tumblr fanbase, which is pretty much the polar opposite of what I want so I'm not expecting to enjoy her much :D Hoping to be proven wrong though!

They did it in Season 6 too... are people really thinking this is the first time they've split them into 2 groups?

But this time it seems we probably won't lose anyone til episode FOUR which seems a bit crazy to me.

I like the splitting them into two groups, but the first episode really was an absolute waste of time it seems.

Symone is my favourite so far, and looks so like Letitia Wright to me.

Symone is giving me Amber from Clueless meets citizens of the town from The Grinch in terms of aesthetic, and I'm VERY HERE FOR IT :disco:

I think a few queens have said Covid has meant they didn't have as much access to designers/drag to borrow from other queens/wigs which might explain the slightly rough and ready looks a little.

Thorgy Thor remains the worst, and most hateable queen this show has EVER SEEN! :argh:

I dunno Gottmiks dresses were pretty expensive and custom made, can’t imagine she had them just TO HAND before the show as she seems to be mostly an insta queen.

I don't even know what "appealing to the tumbr fanbase" MEANS but I'll take your word that it's a terrible, terrible thing :D That's fine, I hate getting my hopes up about queens in the early episodes only to be horrendously let down.
