Saint Etienne: International (and new single: Glad)

It feels more top notch album track than banging single, but I guess we're getting another one before the album, so that can wait for that.

I still must bother to listen to the Glad b-sides. Can you believe I haven't? I've become such a lazy Saint Etienne fan, but not owning a CD player really has fucked things...
 
The b-sides are actually quite good as well, especially Missing Pieces.

The next single is the Confidence Man collaboration isn't it? I'm intrigued as to how that will sound. The album blurb says Nothing Can Stop Us meets Groove Is In The Heart :disco:
 
Somewhat predictable **** review in Mojo. Not much new... 'career-spanning echoes' (including I've Been Trying To Tell You for Sweet Melodies), 'deeply bittersweet - but also a joyous farewell'.
 
Just ordered a second copy of the Rough Trade 2cd release for a friend. Hopefully this extra purchase will rocket the album up the charts a place or two.
 
You would think that top ten could be on the cards. I've Been Trying to Tell You managed 14, and International has the last album angle, plenty of formats and actual pop songs.
 
They’ve had a couple of Top 10 albums which is good to see, they deserved more. Sarah said in the Classic Pop interview her only real disappointment in their career for her was never having a top 10 single. She’s said the PVD collab getting there wasn’t quite the same.

Cracknell/Stanley/Wiggs is a RARE COMBO these days. I guess that is possibly the geographical spread.
 
I think the bonus cd for this is the same as the 2xcd. I like the look of the Italia but I don’t buy vinyl.

The Rough Trade bonus disc is the same whether buying vinyl or CD (I think they always are, and are often CDRs). The St Et store one is a remix disc.
 
The album art threw me a little. The only time she has filmed in Portugal was in 'The House of the Spirits' which was 1993, so couldn't have been 'Good Humor'. Filmed January - April 1993 it could only have been 'Foxbase Alpha' or 'So Tough' and my betting is for 'So Tough' as the album would likely have been promoted in displays as a new release during this time.
 
The fact she bought it on the street makes it sound more like Foxbase Alpha 2nd hand. Schoolboy me was living in Portugal around then and they had proper chart affiliated record stores. Unless it was one of the famous Russian dodgy copies of new releases that found its way into markets.

Our final LP 'International' is set for release next Friday 5th September.

'Brand New Me' is a collaboration with one of our favourite bands, Confidence Man. It features Sarah duetting with Janet Planet throughout the song which is co-produced with Confidence Man's Reggie Goodchild and Tim Powell, formerly part of the Xenomania production team.

We've pressed the single as a limited edition 12" available on both pink and black vinyl featuring our recent David Penn remix of '7 Ways To Love' on the flip side. We've also made a special four track CD EP that includes three brand new - unavailable elsewhere - recordings 'A Chance To Breathe', Carbon Fibre' and 'She Needs Love'.

Two vinyl variants, because of course. The CD/vinyl bundle isn't a bad price, before postage, and the artwork/card sheet are cute.
 
I haven’t even played the last lot of cd exclusives yet. I still don’t understand why throwing them on streaming is a bad idea- it’s not as if they’re going to lose sales.

I haven't gotten around to it- I only use streaming and vinyl these days, though I have a CD player that plugs into my computer...

I'll listen on YouTube this morning maybe, presuming they're on there.

Those cards are FAB! :D
 
Album is a nice little grace note if not a huge career high on first listen.

I wish more of it had been joyful callbacks to the Foxbase Alpha days like Brand New Me.

Dancing Heart could have come right off Words and Music. The interludes are a nice retro touch.

Incredibly, I haven’t had chance yet to stream the album. Maybe tomorrow.

Sarah's voice has obviously changed a bit over recent years but she sounds especially gorgeous here.

Rounded off very appropriately too. Excellent stuff. I had to give The Go Betweens a second spin, but happy to say no skips now.
 
I’m giving it a 10/10 but in reality it probably isn’t a faultless album.

There’s a couple of shonkey nox moments to be heard and yes The Go Betweens was the one that didn’t sit well at first but eventually came good.

Haven’t listened to the bonus tracks yet.
