It's basically MY BEST FRIEND'S CHRISTMAS but with LESSER ACTORS (although I'm partial to Kristin Stewart's comedic timing and general GNARLY ACTING). It even has the TOKEN GAY WINGMAN!

Finally started this in December and just finished Season 6 now. I never binge like that ever.

But do count me in those who thought the first 5 or 6 episodes were tricky for me because I didn't LIKE anyone. I didn't like the family and I didn't like the town people either... and I struggled to see how I could be invested in what happened to any of them.

The moments that really hooked me were Fold In The Cheese (if you've ever seen me in the kitchen I relate...), Alexis and David on a bike (if you've ever seen me on a bike I relate...) and the introduction of the Jazzagals (if you've ever seen me in STAFF CHOIR I relate...).

Then the season finale of Season 2 made me cry when they all danced together at the party and from that moment on I basically watched episodes and did nothing else.

I basically cried for the last 45 minutes as we said goodbye to each character.

Moira, David and Alexis get the majority of the plaudits and I understand why, but by the end I was so behind Johnny too. I loved how at the start they were one unit (and in season 1 Moira, David and Alexis were virtually the same CHARACTER) but as the seasons progressed they all became these unique people that just grew and learned with every step (well, Moira did a bit anyway... )

What a show. I never really rewatch comedies, but I could see myself watching this through two or three times easily.

Oh and finally: 6 seasons is the PERFECT length. 80 episodes is enough to build characters, give them development, but not go stale. Perfect decision making from the Levys.

Yes, I think the quality control is one of the best things about it. I hope they resist all the inevitable calls to revive it.

This is my latest lockdown viewing. I'm only on Season 2 and am enjoying it, it is funneh, but I am BAFFLED by people saying how likeable the family are They are VILE! Especially the kids! How does the fabulous motel manager have feelings for the FUCKWIT son, and the CUNT daughter have TWO men smitten with her? Do they improve, or is it just gays stanning disgusting queens because they have nice clothes and bitchy putdowns?

Oh yes, I'm not arguing with that. Comedy characters don't have to be likeable to be funny - Sharon Horgan is particularly good at making ones that aren't. I was just SURPRISED that anyone would find this lot likeable.

I certainly don’t need to like a character to enjoy watching them, but David and Alexis truly evolve throughout each series, which is part of the charm and good-will towards the end.

Moira does not "evolve" but underneath that façade of tiaras and tantrums there is a fundamentally decent person and she gets several episodes throughout the series where she shows it - with Jocelyn in private, with the Jazza gals, with Alexis. She even has a whole arc about building up Stevie's confidence!

There's a lot of "world-building" in the first season and a half. Takes a while to get going but once you're there, it's fireworks.

i think 10 years ago this would have ended up as a huge syndication hit. But streaming has muddied the waters. It could still happen but Netflix or Prime could be willing to spend enough to money to keep this exclusively for a long time.
