Sheryl Crow - Pick Me Up (new album)

I don't know what happened to Shezz after her first 3 albums, but ever since she's been varying degrees of good but a bit too bland and overly polished. This is just too cheesy and 'can't we all just love each other' for me. And the album cover is certainly a choice.

Those first 3 albums though: WOW.

Marie (assuming she was real and died of heroine) needs to come back and haunt her to spook something more creative out of her. Soak Up the Sun really did herald the end of me getting anything with much grit and texture from her.

That self-titled album is insanely good. So gritty in production, vocals and lyrics, but with massive tunes too.

It is genuinely fascinating. I know artists don't like to repeat themselves, but I just want to shake her(gently) and scream, "GET THE SAME PEOPLE TOGETHER, DO WHATEVER DRUGS YOU WERE DOING AT THE TIME AND MAKE THE SECOND ALBUM AGAIN".

Shorter than the last short “album” but I’ll surely give it a listen.

I’m a ‘Globe Sessions’ stan followed closely by the self titled. I also enjoy ‘Wildflower’, the rest are ripe for cherry picking.

I mean I'll always have time for Mama Sheryl, but she hasn't dropped anything interesting in a long while.

Meanwhile, blasting "Soak Up The Sun" at my friend's Wisconsin lakehouse this summer was a new core memory for me.

It's the musical equivalent of that rainbows and cakes speech from Mean Girls but all unironically :(

I thought she'd previously declared she was never doing albums again but here we are

I came to start this thread - completely missed this! Now sort of disappointed that it's little more than an EP. These days we need Sheryl to release long albums so you can guarantee two or three great songs.

Still, I'm poised and ready. The new song is decent enough but the song she did with Peter Frampton earlier in the year is great - very Tom Petty featuring Stevie Nicks.

The cliff of mediocrity she fell off after 'C'mon C'mon' has to be studied.

This is absolute nonsense. Wildflower is one of her best albums ever, and actually much superior to C'Mon C'Mon. Detours is also a great album albeit a step down. Since then it's been a mixed bag, but Be Myself was a real return to form. The album as a whole was a bit patchy, but it features some great songs.

She's definitely not releasing music like the highs of 90s, but there's been PLENTY to enjoy for Sheryl fans.

Literally nothing she’s released after The Globe Sessions has been anywhere approaching the levels of those first three albums. She’s never made a bad album, but there’s a reason those first albums are so beloved: the music was sublime and fairly gritty. Everything since was high quality, but very slick and polished.

I've always felt that Wildflower got a bad rep and flopped simply because of the outright DULL "Good Is Good" being the lead single

There's some LOVELY stuff buried in the album otherwise, even if nothing of grit. "Chances Are" is easily in her all-time top 10 for me.

Her label were absolutely EVIL in their lead single choices from Wildflower onwards. The obsession with the most Heart FM friendly musical porridge in order to plug an album is such a CONFOUNDING strategy - Beverley Knight's management were exactly the same as it goes

It was at least vaguely understandable with Bev - as much as it would have pissed her original fans off, it was her MOR crossovers that charted the best.

But Sheryl? Her big hitters had always had either GRIT or PERSONALITY or both. I actually blame the PP Arnold cover she did for the Best Of. It gave her management entirely the wrong idea that she should become some sort of EASY LISTENING.

Oh I like Freedom Bus. Better than anything on the last 'album'. I'm a Detours stan though and I do hear some similarity to the vibe.
