Isn’t this, like, the most evocative song ever? It’s always getting played on Old Cuntz FM and unlike all the other knackered 80s staples, I never tire of it and it always makes me smile. So uplifting and so crisp with that 80s production, yet timeless.



There are similar songs that, if you’re 704, transport you back to a place and time such as “Take on Me” but none quite beats this. I think it was a summer song and those burn themselves into your memory more.

I always used to think for TFF that it was downhill after the cooler dark first album and not as good when they became sellouts here, but in hindsight this is surely their finest achievement.

I can't say I was ever a FAN but you've got to give it to them.. it's a corker

The less said about Everybody Wants To Run The World the better though
 
I like it mainly for the montage of 80s events in PETERS FRIENDS

I love all of the major Tears for Fears hits. Woman In Chains is quite pompous, but you can't argue with Oleta Adams ad-libs.

Head Over Heels is my favourite.
 
If ever a song has been RUINED by terrible cover versions, it's Shout.
 
It's one of those songs that you don't realise how good it is until you hear it.

07/10 for me.
 
Mad World is a 10/10. Never been a fan of any of their other stuff.
 
See I preferred "Sowing The Seeds". It's batshit crazy but I kinda like it.

This was good too.
 
It's a solid nine from me, though I prefer the afore-mentioned "Pale Shelter" and "Head Over Heels" still. Those first two albums are really wall-to-wall tours de force, mixing multi-layered synthpop with psychology lyrics without coming across too pedantic. Never delved into the bloated Beatles-aping third one that took 44 years to make though.

Shocked to see Lou giving this a 10, I thought he didn't do music by white and all-male artistés, much less pre-1996? :o

I got a chuckle out of the "death to gary jules" and "donnie darko was shit anyway" tags in the related "Best Tears for Fears moments" thread :D

It was hardly the filmmakers' fault or intention but I do resent Donnie Darko a bit for making that the 'definitive' version of "Mad World" in the majority of people's minds, and on a larger scale the whole 'lo-fi Real Music cover versions of frothy synthpop/dance songs = automatically more emotional than the original' wave. I do have a soft spot for this basic bitch Euro "Mad World" dance makeover, a smash hit single in Denmark a few years back!

I love a bit of overblown, pompous 80s GUFF, but the Tears For Fears singles (bar the mightly full eight minutes of "Woman In Chains") have never really done it for me.

The albums, however, all the way through to the mid-90s efforts, are pretty much MARVELLOUS however.
 
I've been listening to this non-stop in the last 24 hours - fucking JOYOUS. I think it one ups "You Make My Dreams Come True" in the jovial, feel-good 80s-pop crowd for being a little less cheesy and having a more contagious, less try-hard chorus/hook.
