I do tend to think slamming people for liking traditionally black music/fashion is kind of counterproductive, but on the other hand that look is pretty egregious. :D

I'm constantly on edge right now that a celebrity I love will out themselves as a JK Rowling supporting TERF. Don't do it to me Sophie Ellis-Bextor! :(

Thank God I stan Mariah who has always been able to seamlessly traverse white and black culture via genetic happenstance. You can't cancel her, no matter how much you try.
 
As for Adele, I've been waiting to cancel her since she gave us that lazy last album. So I'll take this.
 
Although just to be clear some people obviously should be cancelled for being a dickhead

I just don’t think that includes Adele. And certainly not because Pauline from Barnsley said so
 
I feel like a lot of the people getting properly cancelled (Ellen, all the #metoo perpetrators, etc.) have had it coming. No one is going to fully cancel Adele for this. Her weight loss will probably affect her album sales more TBH.
 
Is there any actual backlash over this or is it just the daily mail finding a few quotes off Twitter, and blowing it up to make it their lead article on their website in order to fuel their anti woke agenda?

If they gave her the outfit and did her hair, it's difficult to see how she can be taken to task. "She should have said no" - what, and been rude to her hosts to satisfy Adrienne-Persephone Profiterole from Hampstead (Mumsnet moderator). But if she drove it, there's a case to answer.

Meanwhile, Trump is heading for imposing martial law in Portland. Just for perspective.

I heard when she does her washing, she separates her whites and coloureds, not because it makes good sense to stop the colours running, but because she thinks that’s how God intended it

The exact same thing happened when Disney released Coco. A bunch of do-gooders kicked off on Twitter and were met by countless tweets from actual Mexican people saying that they liked the film and appreciated how their culture was represented in it.

A lot of people don’t give two shits for other cultures, they just like that feeling of superiority from vocally pretending they do.

We LOVED Coco. OTT but the number of visitors/tourists the small village it takes inspiration from has been increasing annually <3
 
My favourite CULTURAL CANCELLATION of recent times, was people calling for the BBC to axe Famalam, a sketch comedy starring and by black people, because of this Jamaican Countdown sketch.



I mean, it's about as funny as you'd expect BBC scripted comedy to be, but probably doesn't do much for DIVERSITY IN MEDIA to axe a TV show with an all black cast because it's offensive to black people.

My Alison Moyet collection is looking pretty dodgy. And I still very much actively listen to her.

She's clearly skirting the edges of TERFdom but hasn't jumped in yet.

I've not seen (but admittedly haven't looked too hard for) any firm affirmation. But a lot of suggestive support, I can't deny.
 
I mean, it's a fucking hairstyle at the end of the day. What business does anyone have policing what someone does with their own hair? I didn't see anyone clamouring to cancel Faye from the Steps when she culturally appropriated white dreadlocks from Jack Black in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
 
If she does it now, she sure will.

If I were from a minority and I saw some Hollywood star wearing something from my culture, I’d be happy and a bit proud.

Sure there are certain elements to cultural appropiation that originates from colonial times but cultures have always adapted things and ideas from each other. I feel like this new ”problem” is invented by some over sensitive white people that think they’re doing people of colour a favour but instead it’s just making it into another issue that are not working for anyone.

You're not though, and thinking you can put yourself into the mindset of a person of colour and say how you'd feel about anything is ludicrous to me.
 
I was at a wedding last weekend (a Swedish one) where people barely made a sound when the couple exchanged rings. One of my friends said they wished they could do that ululating sounds that us Arabs do, but she said she couldn’t and it would be wrong because of cultural appropiation. :argh: I told her Arabs would be more than happy to have that catching on and making your weddings happier (and more barbarian :disco:)

Definitely. Cultural appropriation would cease to exist if all people and cultures were genuinely equal. It feels like trying to police who can do what with bits of culture is just an easy way to feel like you are achieving something, instead of tackling the bigger issue of actually achieving equality.

Which again is another testament to how these well meaning, tolerant people implicitely imply that anything that’s not white/western is of a lower status and therefore must be protected or treated differently.
