Put all the recent Residents reissues into one CD tower the other day. Might work my way through them one by one...

First you have "A Nickle If Your Dick's This Big", a compilation of home recordings which pre-date the name "The Residents".
 
...then we move onto the debut proper; "Meet The Residents" - we have the mono and stereo mixes (which are actually very different; the stereo mix has much tighter editing) as well as the entire "Santa Dog" EP and several previously unreleased tracks, mostly from the sessions, some from an abandoned project to remix and rework some of the outtakes. Necessary.

"Not Available" is so-called because it wasn't released at the time of recording (1974), being completed and issued in 1978. The 2CD edition includes the previously unreleased original "X is for Xtra" tape from which the album was constructed.

"Duck Stab" was originally released as a 7" EP, playing at 33rpm. However, despite its relative success, the group were unhappy with the sound quality of the discs so plans to release a 2nd EP were nixed and the two records were released as an LP, "Duck Stab/Buster & Glen". This is one of the thinner reissues which is a shame as it is the classic entry point for those new to The Residents, its 14 songs running the gamut from instrumental japes to weird nursery rhymes and the creepiest lost-love song ever, "Blue Rosebuds".

"Eskimo" is widely regarded as a classic and saw the first usage of the now trademark "eyeball head/top hat and tails" look that became synonymous with the group. Whilst, again, some of the ersatz ethnic forgery involved has aged, the subtext of how corporations creep into unpolluted areas and, well, pollute them proved to be prescient and rescues any linger concerns about the miscasting of Inuit people, rather standing as a time capsule of how little we sought to understand cultures before attempting to convert them to Western ways. This was also released as a 2LP & CD set containing various elements from the album culled from the mastertapes and what claims to be a 60 minute recording of Arctic wind. This being the Residents, one never really knows.
