I’m was a bit taken aback at the number of Tory backbenchers criticising the government this morning in the fracking urgent question. It’s not a good start. They are furious at Truss for breaking a promise about local consent.

(And I can confirm BEIS Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg is just as irritating as you’d imagine).

I know I'm being optimistic but I'm hoping the Tory infight starts now and gets worse, causing a GE sooner rather than later.

They're fucked and they know it, and I think many in the party now wouldn't mind a few years to regroup while Labour or whoever mops up the shit.
 
Absolutely hideous budget - huge tax cut for the wealthy, small one for "working families" (an absolute dogwhistle) and "investment zones" ie Charter Cities - they're now selling the British people as well. When do we just start kicking these arseholes down the street?

This is already happening and it’s fucking SHAMEFUL. We have people in tears on the phone because their work coaches have told them the 12 hour cleaning shift they just got isn’t good enough, and they need to find more hours or face losing their UC. Tl;dr, UC claimants are being threatened with sanctions because they found a job, and I hope Kwarteng burns to death.
 
Is claimant the word the DWP uses again? It always was when I started in 1990, then it changed to customer and I think possibly something else (client?) before I left.

I'm not sure there is a great fit, but I hate the word claimant in that context. It's dehumanising.
 
Can we bring back the (pretend) days when you could open a tory thread and at least have a CHUCKLE. I really don't understand what's happening anymore.
 
It's been a horror show for years but now it feels like proper snuff movie territory. The sheer tidal wave of shit! I cannot keep up.

It's an absolute shitshow. People don't want these tax cuts effectively fuelled by extra borrowing. It's beyond a joke.

Financial markets are in absolute chaos. The cost of long term (20 year) government borrowing last month went up the most in a month since October 1978, and as of today it's looking like September will beat that record again.
 
I'm not sure i can even bear thinking about the circle-jerk the Daily Express editors are having right now.

I do find it fascinating how Brits as whole continue to put up with being f*cked over by the ruling elite and have allowed the Tories to dine out on "Labour would be worse" for over a decade, when many other countries/populations would have given them their marching orders long ago.

Is it something in our psyche? Lack of non-sensational impartial new sources?

Being fearful of change is a universal trait but on the other hand "better the devil you know" is a proverb for which I can't think of a direct analogy in my own language. Perhaps this means that some country specific condition happened that valued the importance of familiarity a little more and hence the phrase was coined? 🤷‍♂️
 
I think part of it is culture(stiff upper lip/musn't grumble) but another part is perhaps not wanting to admit or face that "Great" Britain isn't so great after all.

"Empire to failing state" probably isn't something you'd want to shout from the rooftops if your nationality was an important part of your identity, but its something we're going to have to face if we stand any chance of things getting better.

I don’t think most Brits are like that though. Maybe the right wing English are. Having an inflated sense of value and importance is more of an American trait (our American moopers excluded).

We’re much better at taking the piss out of ourselves and mocking how absurd we often are.

Unfortunately we seem stuck in a country where 20% of a vote of 20% of a party that only has a majority in 1 of 4 regions is how you vote in a Prime Minister. No wonder the union is slowly sliding into decay.
 
I think there is still a huge chunk of the UK exactly like that. Yes, more prevalent in the right wing, but sizeable across the board.

And yes, probably even more so in the US, but then they still exercise a huge amount military, cultural and economic influence globally. The UK hasn't really for generations.
 
I mean, I don't know(at least I would hope not) that it's the majority of Englanders but it's a significant number that's for sure.

Is it dying out with the generations? I don't know. I always thought of myself as being surrounded by a pretty forward thinking/liberal extended family growing up. Yet I'm suprised in their older years how many of them voted to "get Brexit done" or took to facebook to tell people to "cut Boris some slack". :manson:

I hope nobody will think I’m trying to defend any of this shit, but I wish they’d find a different way to represent it graphically - when you talk about percentage changes in tax etc, and then the graph is based on total money, this graph is bound to happen most of the time.

Changes to income tax are unlikely to affect the lowest income decile that much because most/all of them will be under the threshold anyway - so there’s nothing to be saved

And even a flat income tax change for everyone would affect these deciles more as you go left to right. And the biggest ones have massive salaries in there too, so their change would be a lot more even if the percentage is the same.

Does that make any sense?
I guess my point is that we’ve seen the right wing papers use stats and diagrams to say whatever, I don’t want the left to use them to mislead either
 
Even though it doesn’t seem like it’s been used as a news story (I don’t know what Bloomberg said about it), even just leaving it context free, knowing what people will reckon from it, is almost as bad for me
 
I don't think the intention is to mislead, or I didn't get that anyway, just a visual representation of what happens when taxes are cut, with the context that this is probably the worst time to apply something to the economy that saves people with high wealth a few quid they don't need, and people on low incomes get no respite. There's a cost of living crisis and she's supposed to be finding ways to make that graph go the other way. That's what I took from it.

But they specifically gave a tax cut to people on over 150k a year! They’re not just benefitting from the flat rate reduction, they specifically targeted the top 1% of earners!
