Slightly OT but rich people being lauded as ‘entrepreneurs’ because they had enough disposable income to get it wrong until something stuck makes me wince as much as when members of the royal family are lauded as ‘charming’ or ‘gracious’. I too would be charming and gracious if I didn’t have to DO SO MANY THINGS

Sorry that’s not what I was trying to say - I mean that even if there was a flat reduction for everyone, the graph would be similar.

Let me be clear, I hate her and this whole government needs to burn to the ground. I just had my “More or less” head on and didn’t like the graph because it makes it easy to discredit the argument by those who want to

But there are ways of changing tax that would show that graph differently. Scotland changed income tax bands a few years ago, giving this graph:

So it is still a useful chart that tells a story. The story this time is that the highest earners got the biggest cuts. But it isn't true that all changes would lead to that.
 
British people are a very peculiar breed in that everyone seems to just sit back and take it again and again and absolutely nothing gets done about anything.

Never underestimate how stubborn people are. It's very hard to get most British people to admit that they were wrong. The Brexiters will never admit that they were conned, even when their number start dying this winter from hypothermia and malnutrition.
 
I mean not to defend the British people, but far right nationalism is on the rise all over the world. It's far from a unique British quirk to cleave to populist rhetoric.

I wonder how many of the 1% benefitting from the 45% bracket sxrapping woke up this morning and said "phew, I really needed that extra £5k a year... it was getting a bit of a struggle. Now, how to invest back into the community?"

Zero. Zilch. Nada.

I'm not benefiting from that bracket but I'm personally feeling a bit pissed off that getting more money back next year than others. SPEND IT ON SOCIETAL GOOD PLEASE

The difference is when a currency plummets it’s a good indication that you’re doing worse than most everyone else
