Big tax cuts, despite all the warnings that there will be fuel on the inflationary fire and looming financial crisis.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is playing with fire, according to SEB's senior economist Robert Bergqvist.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor?

I know this is all amusing / satisfying from an editorial perspective but this is all really frightening. People are really really going to suffer because of this. It’s even worse than my worst expectations. Sorry but I don’t think Truss killing off the Tories for a decade is worth the damage being done right now. It could take longer than that to recover.

But you’d rather have had Sunak being more popular with the public, likely staying in power longer and fucking over the country for a longer period of time?

Yes to the first point. I don’t think that’s possible on your second.

I mean, everything Truss has done so far is entirely reversable. None of it has even been implemented yet. If this mess causes the government to fall (a distinct and desirable possibility) then Labour coming and cancelling plans to cut the taxes etc. will (hopefully) restore confidence again and things will bounce back.

We've not seen Tories this obviously incompetent for decades, they normally boil the frog, which is what Sunak would have done, and possibly won another term off the back of that. You want a change of government as soon as possible, and Truss remains the best way for that to happen.

Who is the prime minister with the shortest tenure, just out of curiosity?

In post-war history it’s Sir Alec Douglas-Home, who lasted 1 year and 1 day.

Shortest of all time is George Canning - 119 days.

Why can't we have Angela Rayner as the actual leader? Or is it better this way in the long term, I dunno.

I think he's smashing it. He's never going to get into power without appealing to former Labour voters, whether they're red wall or Blair era Labour voters. And every statement feeds into that. He doesn't need to appeal to every corner of the party at this stage.

Of course, I'd rather he'd vocalise his support for left wing policies, but if it means he knocks the Tories out of power, all power to him.

He has such a low bar to achieve. If this is smashing it then I despair.

I stand by my statement.
