I'm probably a bit out of touch with the housing market elsewhere as I'm spending most of my time looking at places we could afford on the south coast, but there aren't THAT many places where as a single person you could get a house on a £30k salary, are there? At least as a first time buyer without an inheritance to slap down as a hefty deposit.
 
A £50k deposit on a £600k property will get you a monthly rent of likely £2k a month for about 30 years. ENJOY THAT!

When I think back to when Epponnee and me bought that house in 1995, where we had the party back in the day.

We decided we'd quite like to live together and had already been friends for 7 years or so at that point so knew each other pretty well. Agreed to buy as renting didn't make financial sense. I'm fairly certain our combined salary was only about 25k. About nine months later we (in fairness, he) had the deposit and we were in!

There's been a few like that. I think it was Rachel McClean (who sounds like an X-Factor Over 25s contestant for whom this is 'really my last chance') who suggested people might want to think about earning more money.

Incidentally, for those who went to the party and remember the house, the average price for a house in that street is now 360k according to rightmove. Ours would be worth more, as it had a garage and only a few in that street do. We paid 39.5k for it on a combined salary of 25k.

That's a three bedroom terrace in what was (and probably still is) the cheapest part of inner city Bristol. A very working class area, right next to a large council estate of high rises, with a deprivation index of 9 out of 10.

Fuck knows how you're meant to live somewhere nice. Or in London.

My parents house cost them less than two years of my father's wage. He had a London wage, but we were basically aspirational middle class. We were comfortable. I think based on my current earnings, after a decade of education and £70,000 of student debt, it would take me about 30 years.

Fuck free market economics.
 
My parents' house cost £600 in the mid 60s. Obviously salaries were very different, but my dad was working an apprenticeship at the time in his uncle's company. His uncle lent him the money, and he paid him back out of his wages over 5 years.

As we discussed above Johnson is damaged goods and the optics of swapping PMs AGAIN is literally the opposite of strong and stable.

There's fuck all they can do really, even if the economy is overnight success, and they're still a sad mess.

Johnson may not be down and out long-term (albeit he is almost certainly going to need to find another seat - his constituency is increasingly likely to fall even on a much smaller swing to Labour - so he would be naive to stay put in Uxbridge if he wants to stay in the Commons) but he isn’t coming back to the leadership imminently. I can see how it makes an interesting narrative but it just isn’t going to happen.

Let’s not forget he still has a parliamentary investigation to get through.

If Truss falls as leader (and I expect she won’t imminently) I would look to Sunak or Morduant.

Johnson has been oddly quiet. I'd like to think that is simply a matter of him being no longer of interest now that he isn't PM and just another slovenly, craven Tory backbencher of which we have hundreds. However, I suspect he's up to something. I wouldn't put it past him to sabotage the party in a "if I can't have it, no-one can" way, a petulance that would be entirely in character.
 
Truss resigns late October or early November, Sunak takes over in January and might be forced out himself by August or September. Would Boris take the chance for a make or break or would he elect to wait for his next opportunity in 5 years?

They would change tact economically / perhaps steady the ship, or at least stop the rot, somewhat (much as Michael Howard did post-IDS) but actively reversing electoral fortunes looks fanciful short of a seismic event.
 
Do we think Sunak is going to stick around? He's skipping the conference which suggests that he's not looking to network, grease palms etc.

The Conference is going to be an absolute binfire. I imagine any senior Tory with an eye on their long-term career prospects will be giving it a wide berth or wearing a big floppy hat the whole time.

Everyone who's not directly on the sinking ship is just circling around at a (not overly) safe distance right now.

Rishi was confident in beating Truss and I'm thinking the embarrassing must have stung. It's probably an honour thing for him now and I believe he would do just about anything to prove to his peers they were wrong all along.

Johnson has too much baggage to come back so soon and it would be more scandal after scandal.

Sunak is still seen as a snake by a lot of Truss voters and MP supporters. If he took over, he’d be inheriting a divided party. He also has baggage with his family’s earnings and tax affairs.

The optics of another leadership election in the midst of a self-inflicted economic crisis would be disastrous.

Good points - the conference could be interesting for who isn't there...or who just speaks at a fringe event or two then leaves.
