The United Kingdom: The Liz Truss CRASHING THE PORK MARKET WEEKS ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ“‰๐Ÿ“…๐Ÿฅฌ

So one of Truss's stock lines at last week's PMQs was to bash Labour for only having a plan to cap energy prices for six months, rather than the two years her mini budget offered.

Hunt has just announced that the energy cap will now be reduced in scope... to six months. :basil:

What rules are they actually hoping to change then? Because didnโ€™t May win the leadership election by her opponent dropping out?

I was about to say that you couldn't make it up but, actually, it's entirely predictable. :D

They want to get rid of going to the membership under certain circumstances, I think when they are in Government, so MPs only are picking a new PM

This is all so satisfyingly catastrophic.

On the one hand, the markets recovered quite well this morning, which reduces the pressure to make a change at the top.

On the other, virtually everything Truss campaigned on and attempted to implement with the mini-budget has now been completely scrapped. Total humiliation and it's clear to everyone now that she's PM in name only, Hunt is running the show now.

So will they finish the job and get rid this week, or let her limp on for a while?

Doesnโ€™t that now create 6 months of worry as people worry what will happen to their bills in April. โ€œTargeted supportโ€ means most of us will now face the prospect of even higher increases in expected prices. Thatโ€™s a potential disaster for many households.

I don't think anyone wants a depressed Liz spending the next three months locked up at no 10 pondering who to nominate to the house of lords.

Unfortunately for her (and us) she will have to spend her remaining days/weeks/months doing exactly that, because she made many promises to people to get the leadership and now she needs to make good on her backhander promises

Lobbyists must make a fortune working for this government. They spend more time politicking internally than they do actually running the country.

targeted support is what it should be all along, not universal. right now even the wealthiest households are heaving their energy bills capped. no household earning 200k+ needs to worry if energy bills are 3k or 6k a year. especially as they're likely USING A LOT MORE in their MANSIONS.

it's actually not a bad idea to make it targeted from april, in theory. of course that depends a lot on how "targeted" it turns out to be.

All I get from this is efficiency savings (NOT austerity apparently) because of the money this government has lost in the last 6 weeks

So our taxes for the next ten years are paying for a budget crafted by two people in a room, one of whom is sacked and the other one is on their way out.

How are we not talking about prison sentences at this point? In some countries theyโ€™d have been SHOT by now.

I disagree. Universalism has some advantages. It can't be construed as "unfair" and, crucially, no one will be missed. If you target support there will be people who need support but don't qualify.

Of course, universalism only works with appropriate and progressive tax policy

yes but right now the markets are volatile partly because there's a huge black hole in public finances. they can save plenty of money by making it not universal and eliminating high earners completely.

Or doing a windfall tax to make enough money for it, and then some

The cost of government borrowing has moved to about where it was at Friday lunchtime. A movement, yes, but not one that comes even close to wiping out the disasters of the last month.

Is Labour's "urgent question" game-playing or do they actually have one? The optics of Mordaunt answering it are very poor.

There's so much possibly going on, it's hard to keep up. The current rules say she's safe for a year from a confidence vote right?

Aghhh why can't I find that vile gay's grindr slagoff thread?

If SHE thinks for ONE second she's getting into MY TRUSSY BUSSY, she needs to go to the left to the left, because honey bayBEE mawma doesn't play that
