The War in Ukraine

Diabolical. It feels like the diplomatic screw has firmly turned against Russia - even its supposed allies are at least backing away. I cannot help but feel this could all be ended by some NATO troops on the ground - if Russia is struggling against the Ukrainian resistance then it would be steam-rolled by the NATO forces. Obviously that won’t happen because of the broader risks it brings.

WHO IS DOING THIS?!?
I'm seeing a lot of it on the NewsBreak app. Lots of "Well the Ukrainians aren't innocent either!" and even more conspiracy theory trash

Not to mention, the number of people claiming that "none of this would have happened under Trump". :zombie:

He'd have been on Putin's side.
I expect so, or claiming on he could diffuse the situation.

If we want to know want Trump is thinking (beyond that bizarre piece earlier in the week), just look to his moronic mouthpiece Tucker Carlson.

Are you a WOMAN, CHILD, or ELDERLY MAN fleeing war in your homeland? File the right paperwork, follow the proper procedures, and you can come here to PICK FRUIT.

Goodness. That man is a Home Office minister. He cannot be serious. Surely this is a moment of magnitude when the reigns need to be taken away from Priti and given to an adult.

I have to do lot of social media monitoring at the moment and the "logic" you are presented with from the pro-russian side is absolutely astounding. They don't realise it but they're constantly trying to have and eat the cake.

None of this is new but usually it was over comparatively trivial things but now they actually go to "what about-isms" when the military of their country is bombing hospitals and kindergartens.

the Republicans from my high school sharing memes about this :zombie:

Loufoque does the public have the impression that their troops are only in Donetsk? Also if not what is the explanation they were given for being in Kyiv? How do they justify this to the people?
I don't know what everyone knows. I have just been speaking to a few people (mainly liberal Muscovites, who are all in shock and anti-war). My bf's mum is the only "real" person. She's in what would be the Brexit heartlands of Russia (the poor ones). She said that "going in to save Donbass was one thing, but we never expected bombs in Kiev". She said there have been conversations about whether Putin is mentally "adequate". So, I wonder if the tide is starting to turn. I don't know though - the power of total mass media control (and the shutout of social media) is such a powerful propaganda weapon.

The SWIFT decision is weak sauce. "Some" Russian banks. If it's not Sberbank and VTB, then it's nothing. And even if it is, it allows all transactions to be funnelled through other banks.

The bigger hit seems to be the sanctions on the Russian Central Bank. It apparently spent billions on Friday trying to prop up the ruble (it didn't achieve much). But as of tomorrow, the ruble could absolutely spiral and wipe out the savings of 100m+ people. Hyperinflation on a Lebanese / Venezuelan scale. Let's see.

The whole "make molotov cocktails" advice is so chilling.

This is the current government advice.

  • Dismantle road signs
  • Fell trees to make movements impossible
  • Actively use home-made incendiary devices
  • Destroy key transport hubs
  • Be more active at night or dusk

:D:disco: I’m quite liking it. Nothing better than a COLLABORATIVE HANDS ON EFFORT :disco:

surely this is not all Russia can muster. I'm worried they are gonna take it up a level or two before long
You’d thing so, but some of the intelligence here, or that which is being made public, seems to suggest that they may have badly miscalculated.

Also, it seems whilst it has a large force it may not be that well trained or motivated.

Motivation and preparedness seems to be quite a factor here.

Maybe its just western media narratives but the impression I get is that no-one really wants this. A captured soldier claimed he didn't know he was going to Ukraine. Those videos of soldiers being harassed by civilians, they just don't react.

By all accounts, they can't afford to; the money for this operation is rapidly drying up :disco:

Not to mention that most reports of captured Russian soldiers describe them as teenagers who thought they were on training exercises.

Fallen down a rabbit hole of watching pro Putin propaganda. Here Putin meets a child with cancer.

I heard you like sports
Yes
How long?
5 years
COOL.

Yes - they seem absolutely dazed, some of them even unclear as to where they actually are.

Same, and I see photos of the soldiers and look like they're a bunch of 18 year olds, even read some saying that they didn't know what was going on and thought they were in an exercise. It makes me worried.

Oh they knew EXACTLY what was going on :eyes:

This! They're practically children sent over to do what and for whom? It's crazy.

infantry is one thing; what about ballistics?
There are bombings going on, we've had 10 ex-pat casualties just yesterday, one of them a child, in Mariupol. They're arguing over who did it, as one side blames the other, but there are definitely bombings going on. And there was also the story VOR shared with the children's hospital. And there were also those apartments in Kyiv.
