The War in Ukraine

Zelensky being positioned as a global QOL is actually quite fortunate; can you imagine the global reaction now if he’s captured and/or killed?

We should never underestimate the power of celebrity PR in the age of social media. Most people probably couldn’t tell you who he was 2 weeks ago…

I have a possibly stupid question, forgive me.

But, obviously Russia are attacking Ukraine with missiles etc.

But if Russian soldiers walked past a Ukrainian family trying to shelter or escape, would they shoot them, or just walk on by as they arent a threat?

This is going to come across wrong, I don't know how to word it exactly, but are they attacking to kill as many Ukranians as possible, or to get attention and cause damage to infrastructure, and anyone who gets in the way is a casualty?

Killing a non-combatant would be even more of a war crime than what Russia are doing anyway, so they shouldn’t be trying to kill anyone who isn’t fighting against them. Whether that will actually be the case in practice is very much a different question.

It would be against the rules of war to shoot that family, unless they convince someone it was a military necessity. It doesn't mean it won't happen.

There is little benefit in slaughtering all civilians as they are workers. From how it appears so far I don't think mass slaughter is the way forward for Putin, but some casualties are part of the process.

Thank you both. That's a tiny bit of relief I suppose.

Although now the civilians are being given weapons and making petrol bombs, I assume they would be classed as fighting against Russia and would risk being killed?

They would probably be fair game regrettably.

On top of what @dmlaw just said, the Russian soldiers in Ukraine aren't the battle-hardened savages Russia would have them be. Most of them are young, have never seen combat before and, by all accounts, are more likely to surrender or defect than pose a direct threat to civilians. It's quite clear this isn't their war, nor is it the will of the Russian people; it's just the whim of an increasingly deranged would-be despot whose temperament would be greatly improved if he had a bullet lodged in his brain.

Yes, possibly. If the Russians wanted to be cunts about it, they could almost certainly regard any adult Ukrainian male as a combatant who could be asked to surrender and killed if he refuses.

Turkey are going to block access to the Black Sea!
They have been saying this for the past 3 days but haven't done it so far, I think they'll do it in the end but I presume they're caught in the dilemma on how to keep both sides happy, since their leadership is one of the friendliest to the one of Russia yet at the same time can't ignore common ancestry with the tataric part of Ukraine.

Yeah I have been watching a reading a fair bit and actually feel a bit sorry for the Russian army. I know when you join the army, going to war is always a possibility, but not going to war with your neighbours.

Actually there's a huge amount of stuff on TikTok about the invasion, with a lot of Russian posters doing very emotional videos, apologizing for what's happening.

I did think that. I was surprised they've done this. Especially as they rely on Russia a fair bit.
My take on shitty governments going against Putin is they're totally all mouth, no trousers. Normal allies or sympathisers have dropped like flies. Cultural wars are one thing, a real invasive war on NATO's doorstep with a friendly nation is quite another.

And for that I'm grateful.

No one else kind of panicking about the nuclear escalations?

All I can think about at the moment is "I don't want to survive a nuclear war, and I kind of want something in place as a contingency if one starts"

So far any reaction to this has been to silence me for "fear mongering"

A friend of mine who’s a pharmacist said they’ve had customers coming in all day asking for iodine pills.

Who wants a picture of human dream boat and perfect man Volodymyr Zelenskyy taking it like a man?

To be fair there is certified satellite footage of a three mile long Russian convoy heading towards Kyiv.
