The War in Ukraine

Russian rockets are falling very close to the Polish border. Potentially a few miles from this shit elevating.

Just reading up on the UK's proposed refugee scheme. What a fucking sham.

Apparently you can take in a named refugee and receive a cash payment for it. A named refugee. Which means you actually have to find a specific person for it to be acceptable.

Edit: looks like there's going to be a specific website. That's something.

This is an interesting thread on Russian influence in the UK including our very own PM and The Telegraph.

We all knew the Barclays are/were a pair of cunts but this does go a LOT further than anticipated.

One down, one to go and I hope it's fucking painful.

There's an interactive map with the destination countries and the numbers of refugees here. I think the problem with the UK is the Visa requirement, if am not mistaken nobody else asks for one.

Am watching now a news special on this and they say that this is going to be massive compared to any other exodus so far, cause the number of people that need to be evacuated is somewhere close to 13M. Our local numbers have nearly doubled in the last 3 days alone.

And if China decides to respond by providing economic support to Russia, then it might be game over.
Couple of problems here. China's economic future is inextricably linked up with the west. Its economy has been rocky as of late and it cannot afford to piss off the USA and Europe too much. Thanks to sanctions, Russia, along with Ukraine will be a basket case very soon, so if China wants to bail it out as well as pay for making Ukraine habitable again after Russia finally calls a halt to its programme of urban renewal, then it will take a very heavy toll on the Chinese economy. Add to that, China relies on imports of Ukraine's wheat, which is by no means certain this year with all the damage going towards Ukraine's infrastructure even if the Russians can somehow extend their rule to the whole country. I doubt that Russia has the manpower to achieve that, especially as the West of Ukraine is trickier terrain, geographically, to say nothing of idealogically. The most Russia will likely achieve is to "neutralise" it. That will alarm China.

Most likely, Putin promised China a short, sharp war, similar to what happened in Crimea and, to a certain extent, the Donbass. This is not likely to happen and we are heading towards another Chechnya. Minds in Beijing will be exercised by the rapid movements of the west to divest itself of any reliance upon Russia. While, that might be achievable to a decisive extent if not entirely, it will be harder to do the same with China. Nevertheless, at the very least, Xi can expect some Trump style tough negotiation on trade with the US to come. That will be enough to give it pause for thought as to whether it backed the right horse.

Yeah I've reading a lot about China's behavior around trade, and I think they're much more conservative than the West in terms of risk taking.

Shortparis have released this stunning anti-war song, the choir is composed of Russian Veterans, some of whom fought the Nazis.

Yup this seems like the next stage of the game of Chicken. How many attacks will make it """"accidentally""" across the Polish border (you know how Putin likes to see how far he can push things) before NATO has to step in? And then in WW3, how far can conventional weapons be pushed before someone gets tempted by "just one little nuke over here, they won't retaliate or it'll be the end of the world"...

I've been speaking to my Polish cousin. She's saying the Polish government are doing very little for refugees, it's all the citizens. Caveat, she fucking hates their government. She's been volunteering translating for new Ukrainian kids at her kids school. She says it's increasingly visibly chaotic out there.

She also claims to have seen American troops on the streets of Krakow, which fits with the apparent build up in the south of Poland.

are you saying putin is deliberately dropping bombs in poland to antagonise nato and provoke escalation or am i misunderstanding?

There’s something faintly comical about the way they are suddenly spirited away mid-sentence.

I'm imagining this happening with those constant vox-pops from English High Streets our news stations loves, and... I would like to see it...

Speaking of the devil, I think this just happened

Can't read that as paywalled but I can't see China giving more than lip service. It would go against its stated policy of non-intervention into other countries' territorial disputes, thereby opening up its own to international involvement.

More to the point, China's shitty weapons have been part of the problem thus far. Its useless cheap tyres have been bogging down that convoy for a while, not being able to cope with Ukraine's less than ideal muddy terrain. Mind you, can't see anyone else willing to sell Russia useful weapons in the foreseeable future and especially not for worthless IOUs. At this rate, rather than turning Ukraine into a Russian vassal state, Russia might very well become a Chinese one.

Apparently Google Translate have stopped translated between Russian and other languages.

Umm… 🤷‍♂️
Making it harder to communicate with Russians is definitely going to help at the moment, yes :goodgrief: Honestly what is the justification there? Putin doesn't benefit or profit from the fucking LANGUAGE.

The same kind of idiotic virtue signalling that we see more and more of with each crisis/major event. If anything it only does more harm than good.

Is there a reliable source for this? I’ve only been able to find this proxy account (which really should be blocked):

It definitely true. Hasn't stopped working at all, nor has any account of the Russian bloggers I have subscribed to on YouTube. They were messaging to install VPNs and whatnot recently as most of the censorship is happening within Russia rather than from without.

Not yet, just that it seems not very far beyond the realms of possibility that he'd see how far things can be pushed and whether the odd thing can make it through by "accident" in preparation for if Ukraine falls and attention is turned to the next neighbouring countries. It'd give him an idea of how much he can get away with via micro-escalations

Wasn’t Instagram supposed to be banned in Russia from today? Still seeing this pro Putin meathead cunt posting.

I don't want to damn people for venting, but it is a bit exhausting and even insensitive to bound in at midnight on a Sunday predicting an imminent nuclear apocalypse. Maybe the key is staying out of this thread but it is mostly an interesting read; it's just when individuals are repeatedly speaking about the worst case scenario as if it's a dead cert...

I was hardly stating the worst case as a dead cert. Just voicing concerns about the potential for where it could go if things start spilling over the border and indeed, a hope that if it did get to that, both sides would be sensible enough to stick to conventional stuff.

But yes, I do worry about stuff. Sorry, I'll go and keep the worries to myself
