Yes, essentially he's just done the same in the singles chart. And he's done it to a song and artist which is much more moopy's bag. I imagine had she not already had a week at #1 we would be even more annoyed.

Anyway, she has a great chance at #1 next week, and in some ways, booting someone back off and reclaiming #1 almost seems bigger than denying them in the first place.
 
She might have a chance to climb to #1 again next week? Surely he's going to drop badly, probably outside the top 10.

Because clearly no one is buying a cd single to consume it - it is solely a collectors item so it makes a mockery of what already is a ridiculous chart system. We can all agree this song isn’t the most popular in the country currently, so for it to be #1 on the chart due to record company scheming just doesn’t sit well.
 
But the number 1 single hasn’t been the most popular song in the country for years.

according to whomst? the #1 single is almost always the most streamed song in the UK and that's how people are listening to music. and please DON'T hit me with the "oh it's just because people passively listen to playlists!".

if anything it's more accurate than the "fanbase buys the CD single in week 1" rhythm of the 2000s (as reappropriated by Ms Capaldi today)
 
Only LadBaby didn’t have a popular number 1 but most of them this year have been popular such as BOTA, Afraid to Feel, Running Up That Hill, As It Was, Unholy, Blue (I’m Good), Escapism. TikTok influences what people stream overall which impacts the charts more than ever but generally the top ones are popular with young people. Playlisting only goes so far.
 
Compare the list of streaming #1s to sales #1s in the thread I posted (and must start again for 2023). It's clear which one has most crossover appeal.

Obviously some huge songs don't get to #1, but that always was the case.
 
Ed Sheeran has a lot of GP appeal so there is crossover. There will always be artists who go on a CD campaign for a top 10 placing but selling 22,000 CDs and 16,000 downloads to get #1 means Lewis can put whatever out and still get #1 by begging his fanbase. He did it for Forget Me but that was 5000 CDs, 5800 downloads and 3000 vinyl.

Cunts always got fanbase no.1s. The Jam were doing it in the early 80s. Iron Maiden in the 90s and Westlife in the 00s.

There's always been novelty shite. If anything the 2022 no.1s were more pop than they've been for years, because, I suspect older people, who don't care for listless Spotify shite, are picking up on streaming and youthful trends as ever turn and change and pop is back.

I guess buying Capaldi CDs is no different to buying LadBaby or The Kunts downloads, in as much as hardly any fucker who is paying £££ for them ever actually listens to them.
 
Or Band Aid 2 or Love Will Build a Bridge or Barry Islands in the Stream.

I think its more like the Kylie albums, in that the people that buy them might not actually listen to that format, but they are genuinely fans. Surely nobody is choosing to listen to Ladbaby in April, but some people do like Lewis Capaldi
 
Perhaps, but I was thinking more specifically towards singles, and the fact that nobody is actually listening to any of them.

Was TikTok responsible for Tom Odell's Another Love exploding again?
 
It's strange really - Tom Odell released an album July 21 which had one week on the chart at #4, an album only a couple of months ago which had one week at #7, and hasn't had a new single chart since 2016.

Another Love recharted in April 21 after 7 years off the chart, has been on and off the chart ever since, and matched its original peak last week. So it's keeping him relevant when his new material appears to be struggling to do so. But it must also pose a bit of a problem for his label now.
 
I think that's a quirk that's befalling a lot of acts now.

The Arctic Monkeys released a new album only three months ago. It's already dropped down in the charts to behind three of their older albums. Meanwhile while the new singles all generated semi-interest for a few weeks, they were all being overshadowed by a resurgence for '505', a 2007 album track that TikTok had discovered.

In a way it might be a nice problem to have. It might be frustrating for the marketing department, but the record labels probably aren't complaining at raking in the £'s for old songs that they don't have to spend on any promo for.

It's also nice to know there is always that very small glimmer that even if a song flops on release, it's no longer automatically the end.

Agreed. I've decided to make a point of following the charts this year again to go with mine and @Tetris-Rock's religious following of Pick of the Pops, and while a fair chunk of the top 40 is the kind of uninspiring bollocks that led me to become disillusioned with following the charts in the first place, there's ALWAYS been a fair amount of dreck around in the charts really no matter when - be it 1993, 2003, 2013 or 2023. But the top ten at the moment has immediately struck me as, by and large, actually pretty good stuff.

(That Central Cee one can absolutely fuck off though.)

They chose to neglect the UK and even their European fans for the past year until they wanted album sales with secret shows. I dunno maybe they don’t really care and are more interested in how they do in the US.
 
The whole top 5 singles are non movers this week. That has to be relatively rare.
 
Måneskin ended up at no.5

Last week's no.1 album dropped off the chart entirely. That was a reissue of a Courteeners album.
