I don't think the moment's gone at all. The Tories are in freefall at this point, there are more pictures still to be released, and we've only a couple of months until the inevitable bloodbath at the local elections.

We're literally in the middle of the MPs being back in their constituencies for a week and the bit of the police investigation. It's pretty unlikely the 'moment' will be 'gone' if next week once they get back he gets a fixed penalty notice, or the investigation concludes and Sue Grey releases her report in full.

He...more or less has no political capital and is entirely beholden to the whims of individual MPs at this point? 'In office but not in power' seems fairly undone for someone who won the first big majority for his party just over two years ago, had double digit leads this time a year ago, and probably isn't going to survive the year *because* of this.

Johnson slithering out of danger is no indication that he got away with it. Look at the lengths he’s having to go to in order to get a stay of execution, he’s losing the public more each week and the desperation of the tame newspapers to decry this all as a remainer plot tells you exactly how much trouble he’s in.

There may be an element of strategy in regards to Boris not being pushed JUST YET. If he wins a vote of no confidence right now (likely) we are stuck with him for another year. If the local election results are a disaster for the Conservatives in May (also likely) and a vote of no confidence is pushed through afterwards, he's a lot more likely to lose I'd imagine.
A slight gamble perhaps should Boris BOUNCE BACK over the next three months (unlikely, but not impossible), but a potential better outcome for all than the country being HANDCUFFED to him for another 12 months with his ridiculous majority.

Truss's bewildering popularity with the Tory membership is an issue as well. The party don't want her as a leader because they know she's a total chump but the same membership that voted for Johnson love her. So it's not prudent for them to shove Johnson when, potentially, something even worse, just in a different way, awaits.
