The US economy is growing and there is positive job growth but people don't feel wealthier. Like in the UK, people have been feeling the impact of high inflation, low wage growth, high cost of living and a housing crisis. That seems to be a key factor in why so many, including Democrat voters have swung to Trump. A lot of Americans don't feel like their lives have improved under the Biden administration, and Harris was inevitably tied to that.

Whilst yes, American's get take home more than Brits and Europeans, remember they have to pay so much more for things that are taken care of by the state here. They also get shite holiday, sick, and maternity pay too.

Whilst I am here - New York slid from a 23% lead to 11%. New Jersey from 16% to 5%.

I am not saying there is a trend, but imagine a world where IL and NJ (with 33 EVs between them) became competitive.

I dont think its a trend. I think things will return to "normal" in 4 years. This was just the perfect storm of pent up frustration, Biden's cognitive decline and a disastrous candidate and campaign.

That said, its astonishing just how much the blue states have been hit, even with all of the above. The "Americans are stupid" rhetoric is hugely ill-informed.

I mean it all depends on where you live. I have an education and have been a nurse for 25 years and barely make $50,000 a year.

Average rent for a small apartment in my area is around $850 a month. Groceries are higher than they were previously. Gas is currently $2.50 to $3 a gallon.

Most people here make minimum wage or a little over.

In terms of numbers alone, the US economy is doing very well. But inflation has made it very difficult for regular people to reap the benefits of a robust economy. People's ability to absorb the shock of an economic crisis has wavered across the decades.

But geopolitically, the US economy is still that girl.

They were essentially both fodder. The Democrats needed anyone who would look vaguely competitive to take the fall during a sure Trump victory. Harris fit the bill. She was a convenient choice who could run under the banner of "the woman vote" but I don't believe that they had any real hope of her winning.

BBC swing state graphs were very steadily showing the candidates converging on trajectories that could be easily extrapolated imo
